KPL Directors Carol MacKinnon and Kevin Ferguson hosted a visit from the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) Ports and Offshore Wind team; Paulina Dence, Senior Policy Advisor, Chloe McCallum, Head of Offshore Wind Ports, Jamie Leatham - Senior Government Advisor - Floating & Deepwater Offshore Wind. Joining the visit from British Ports Association was Mark Simmonds, Director of Policy & External Affairs along Greg Paterson, Senior Development Manager – Energy Supply Chain & Infrastructure and Chantal Geyer, Senior Project Manager from Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

The focus of the visit was to help DESNZ better understand the role of ports in the region. We were delighted that they wanted to include Kishorn Port to their 3-day itinerary. Our company overview was presented to the group followed by a tour of the port site and Dry Dock. The guests were able to see firsthand the ongoing construction of phase 1a of the extensive development plans.

Kevin commented; “It was a pleasure hosting the guests at the port on Thursday. We discussed the challenges and opportunities that we have ahead in such an exciting time with huge potential for port facilities in Scotland. Kishorn Port supports multi sector industries and we believe we are well placed to play a huge part in the nations energy security going forward.”

We are delighted to share that we have won the prestigious “Sustainability in Decommissioning Award” at the recent Decom Mission Dinner and Award Ceremony held in Aberdeen on Thursday night.

The category celebrated the progress reached to date of the regeneration of Kishorn Port yard and dry dock to facilitate the decommissioning of oil and gas structures in a safe and environmentally friendly manner, whilst maximising material recycling potential. It is testament to the hard work of all team members involved, who have been a part of KPL, past and present. It is also very fitting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the yard back in 1976 by the then Prince Charles!

Steve Welham, Head of Safety & Compliance received the award on behalf of KPL and commented; “I was both humbled and honoured to accept the Sustainability in Decommissioning Award on behalf of the whole team at Kishorn Port. This award is a testament to our ongoing contributions to the circular economy whilst keeping sustainability across all port and dry dock operations to the fore and recognises many years of regeneration to position the Port to meet the needs of the energy transition.”

A great evening was had by all, and we congratulate the other finalists; Able UK and ASCO on their achievement.

Carol commented; “It was a pleasure for us to welcome Mike and Tom to site and share with them an update on our expansion works to date with our Dry Dock extension and reclamation area, along with us sharing the vision and next steps that we are taking on our journey at Kishorn Port”.

As you can see from the photographs it was during the brief but very beautiful weather we had on the West coast!

Kishorn Port welcomes Royal visitor as major expansion continues

Yesterday, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal was welcomed to the major expansion project at Kishorn Port.

The Royal visitor met staff and contractors during a tour of the west coast site, which is one of Scotland’s most strategically important deep water energy industry facilities.

Kishorn boasts one of Europe’s largest dry docks, which was officially opened by The Princess Royal’s brother, King Charles III, 50 years ago this year.

The current £42.2million expansion project will enable the Port, originally established as an oil and gas industry yard, to play a pivotal role in delivery of offshore wind projects.

Kishorn Port Limited (KPL) Managing Director, Alasdair Ferguson, said: “It was a great honour to welcome Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal to Kishorn Port and to have the opportunity to show her at first hand the progress we are making with this important project.

“Having recently marked the 50th anniversary of its opening, we were delighted to have this opportunity to outline the exciting future we foresee for the Port.

“As well as opening Kishorn to new market opportunities, the development will provide the catalyst for the support and creation of jobs within Wester Ross and the wider Highlands, benefitting communities and the supply chain across the area.”

The Phase 1a expansion project, which started last year, will see the size of Kishorn’s dry dock increased and land reclaimed to create the capacity for the manufacture of concreate floating offshore wind foundations.

Regional development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is investing up to £24m in the project and construction work on the development has created 84 jobs for up to 18 months.

The principal contractor for the project is RJ McLeod, based in Scotland, with offices in Dingwall and a long-established track record in the Highlands. Supporting services are also being delivered by Scottish firms: marine consulting civil engineers, Wallace Stone; environmental consultants, Affric, and; project management consultants, Leapmoor.
