It was fantastic to come together yesterday for a day of creativity with local artist Heather Horsley Illustration 🎨

Taking time to connect in person is so valuable - and what better way than through painting! We loved seeing everyone’s unique flair come to life on the canvas.

Heather is a freelance illustrator and portrait artist based in Derby, with over 30 years of experience bringing warmth and personality to her artwork. Her style is creative, contemporary, full of character and always thoughtfully tailored to each client and project ✏️

Working across publishing, greeting cards, and private commissions, Heather is especially passionate about portraits - whether of people, pets, or musicians. As a lifelong brass band player, music is a recurring theme in her work and a personal source of inspiration 🎶

A big thank you to Heather for guiding us through the day - we had a fantastic time! You can explore more of Heather’s work via her website, Instagram, and Facebook.

In our recent conversation with Heather Howarth, Associate Director of Project and Patient Management at VCTC, she shared valuable insights into the strategies that help improve patient participation and retention in clinical trials. 📝

”Patient recruitment and engagement have become increasingly challenging as clinical trial protocols grow more complex. One effective strategy I’ve found is identifying key contact points with participants at the start of the study.

By scheduling regular, intentional interactions, we’re able to keep patients informed, involved, and reassured throughout the trial. We also focus on providing clear, concise, and relevant information at each stage.

There is a huge amount of information provided to participants during the study so we make sure the team is always available to answer questions and clarify anything that may be confusing.” 💬

💬 “You have been the primary catalyst to the great results and progress we have seen.”

By focusing on clear communication, timely responses, and planning ahead, we help our partners reach their goals efficiently.

In one recent case study, we cut start-up timelines from 12 to 6 months - just one example of how our hands-on approach produces results and accelerates progress.

VCTC partnered with a pharmaceutical company to support an ultra-rare disease study, re-engaging six adult patients across the UK who had previously been lost to follow-up.

These participants faced significant physical challenges and had experienced poor trial interactions in the past. The study involved a 5-week on-site monitoring phase followed by long-term self-administration at home.

To address the study's complexities, VCTC implemented patient-centric strategies:
• Set up local, low-cost community clinics close to each patient
• Adapted care to individual needs, from equipment to home storage
• Managed complex cross-border travel and logistics
• Ensured direct, ongoing communication and support

All six patients were successfully enrolled and retained, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and the sponsor. Our approach delivered a low-burden, efficient solution that prioritised safety, comfort, and access to care.
