Flood testing underway on a newly refurbished reservoir.

Following completion of the refurbishment works, our team carried out a controlled flood test to check for any signs of water ingress and confirm the integrity of the lining system.

This stage is a key part of quality assurance, helping to verify performance before the asset is returned to service.

Reservoir refurbishment, waterproofing and protective lining works delivered with technical detail in mind.

Large-scale digester refurbishment works underway...

Our team is carrying out full surface preparation to remove the existing failed coating system, exposing and profiling the substrate to create the correct surface for a uniform render application. This is a critical stage in ensuring long-term adhesion and performance before the installation of the spray-applied polyurea top coat.

Digesters operate in some of the harshest environments within the water sector, where chemical attack, moisture ingress and structural deterioration can quickly compromise assets if surface preparation is not completed correctly.

This project highlights the scale and technical detail involved in asset refurbishment, extending service life and protecting critical infrastructure for the long term.

Preparation is everything.

Another clean water reservoir refurbishment nearing completion.

This recent Flexcrete Technologies Limited 851 application is now in its final stages, with only the joint banding left to complete before handover.

UCL has delivered the full project scope from start to finish, beginning with UHP water jetting preparation, followed by re-profiling render repairs, through to the application of the Flexcrete cementitious coating system.

The final stage will be joint banding, completing a full refurbishment solution that adheres to Regulation 31 requirements and Drinking Water Inspectorate standards for clean water assets.

A complete asset protection solution, extending service life and maintaining compliance for critical infrastructure.

Final results and full case study coming soon.

Following the deployment of our UHP jetting equipment to remove heavy surface build-up, we have commenced the re-profiling phase. Using a specialised render system, we are currently establishing a uniform, structural profile necessary for the final protective top coat.

Every stage of this process adheres strictly to Regulation 31 and DWI standards, ensuring full compliance for potable water assets. Our technical approach guarantees both the integrity of the substrate and the long-term performance of the coating system.

We are currently on-site executing the critical substrate preparation phase prior to the structural refurbishment of a potable water storage tank.

Our professional Substrate Preparation utilises UHP (Ultra-High Pressure) Jetting to remove surface latency and build-up, returning the structure back to a sound, solid substrate across all walls, columns, floors, and soffits.

This level of mechanical preparation is essential to ensure the longevity of the final DWI-approved lining system and to meet the rigorous standards of Regulation 31.

More technical updates to come as we move into the re-profiling and coating application stages.

Many concrete structures fail long before the end of their design life.

Not because the concrete itself is inadequate, but because chemical exposure, water ingress and abrasion are left unprotected.

Over time this can lead to:

โ€ข Reinforcement corrosion
โ€ข Concrete spalling
โ€ข Chemical degradation
โ€ข Structural weakening
โ€ข Costly replacement works

In many cases, these assets can be refurbished and protected rather than replaced.

At UCL we specialise in:

โœ” Concrete repairs
โœ” Protective coating systems
โœ” Waterproofing and containment linings
โœ” Chemical resistant coatings
โœ” Structural strengthening solutions

The aim is simple. Extend asset life and reduce capital replacement costs.

For asset owners and principal contractors, refurbishment can often provide significant savings while improving long-term durability.

Most infrastructure coating failures are not product failures.

They are design, preparation or specification failures.

In this short article, we break down the five most common reasons assets in water, wastewater and industrial environments fail prematurely, and how early technical involvement reduces lifecycle cost and programme risk.

If you are responsible for asset protection, refurbishment or capital delivery, this may be worth a read:

In the water, wastewater and infrastructure sectors, premature coating failure is often attributed to product performance. In reality, most failures stem from specification errors, inadequate surface preparation, environmental mismanagement or poor detailing.

If your concrete asset is 30+ years old and hasnโ€™t been refurbishedโ€ฆ youโ€™re managing risk, not infrastructure.

We were recently appointed to refurbish an aged concrete structure with no previous lining. On the surface? It looked stable.
In reality? Soft surface build-up, deteriorated concrete, no protection, and increasing risk of failure.

This is what many asset owners are dealing with quietly:

โ€ข Tight budgets
โ€ข Pressure to keep assets operational
โ€ข Fear of opening up something that โ€œmight get worseโ€

But hereโ€™s the lesson: Deterioration doesnโ€™t slow down because budgets are tight. It accelerates.

In this project, we:
โ€ข Water jetted at 18,000 psi back to sound substrate
โ€ข Re-profiled to reinstate structural integrity
โ€ข Installed a fully bonded cementitious lining system

Refurbishment done properly can add decades to an assetโ€™s life at a fraction of replacement cost.

If you havenโ€™t exposed your substrate, you donโ€™t know the condition of your asset.

Asset owners... when was the last time you truly assessed whatโ€™s happening beneath the surface, not just whatโ€™s visible?

Halfway through a live project in Market Lavington.

Hereโ€™s a short snippet of high-pressure water jetting preparation at 18,000 psi, a critical stage in achieving the correct surface profile and ensuring long-term performance of the applied system.

This phase demands more than just powerful equipment. It requires experienced operators, controlled methodology, and a clear understanding of the substrate and end specification. Our site team continue to demonstrate the professionalism and technical discipline that UCL Ltd is known for.

Full details and a complete case study will be shared soon... including the challenges faced, the engineering decisions made, and the final outcome.

Stay tuned.
