Concrete looks permanent. It isn't.

In water treatment environments, the chemistry is brutal. Hydrogen sulphide gas converts to sulphuric acid in the presence of moisture. That acid attacks concrete at the surface, and over time, you can lose 20mm or more of the structural layer.

The early signs are easy to miss: a slightly rough texture, minor surface scaling, a faint smell. By the time it's obviously failing, significant damage has already been done.

Routine inspection and proactive surface protection are always cheaper than emergency repair.

3 things that need to happen before a fuel tank inspection and why most delays come down to preparation, not the inspection itself:

1. Clean and gas-free certification. The tank must be fully degassed and independently verified before entry. No exceptions.

2. Surface prep to the right standard. Inspectors need to see the steel, not contamination. That means proper cleaning to the specified blasting profile.

3. Documentation trail. Every step of cleaning and preparation should be recorded. If it isn't documented, it didn't happen... at least not as far as the auditor is concerned.

Get these right and the inspection goes smoothly. Get them wrong and you're looking at costly delays.

Happy International Dog Day from UCL 🐾

Meet Dexter, a valued member of the wider UCL team.

While our day-to-day work is focused on protecting, repairing and extending the life of critical assets, today is a good excuse to recognise the four-legged companions who make the working day that little bit better.

Here’s to Dexter, and all the dogs keeping offices, sites and home-working setups under close supervision.

Confined spaces. Hazardous gases. Structures that haven't been entered in years.

Some of the most critical industrial assets are also the most dangerous to work inside. That's where remote robotic technology changes everything.

Deploying robotic UHP water jetting units inside anaerobic digesters means our team can clean complex geometries thoroughly, without putting people in harm's way. Faster, safer, and more consistent than manual methods.

At UCL, we’re already using this technology to make high-risk industrial cleaning safer, faster and more effective.

Polyurea is one of the most versatile protective linings available, and still massively underused.

It dries in seconds. It's seamless. It handles chemical exposure, abrasion, and impact, and when applied correctly (spark-tested, defect-free), it creates a monolithic barrier.

We've used it on potable water tanks, filming tanks, enamel-bolted structures, and digester floors. The same chemistry. Very different environments. Always the same result: watertight, durable, long-lasting.

If you're specifying a lining system and polyurea isn't on the shortlist... it should be.

Not all surface preparation is equal, and the difference matters more than most people realise.

Ultra-high-pressure (UHP) water jetting operates at up to 40,000 psi. That's not just powerful cleaning; it's precision engineering. It strips failed coatings, epoxy adhesives, and contaminated concrete back to a clean, sound substrate, without the micro-fractures that mechanical tools leave behind.

Why does that matter? Because any new lining or coating is only as good as what it's bonded to.

Get the preparation wrong, and even the best products will fail.

Replacing an ageing tank or reservoir isn't always the answer.

In most cases, the structure itself is sound. It's the coating, the lining, or the joint system that's failed — and that's a very different (and much cheaper) problem to solve.

The right refurbishment approach can add 20 to 50 years of service life to an asset that looks like it's done. Proper surface preparation, compliant materials, and rigorous testing make all the difference.

Don't write off your assets before you've had them properly assessed.

Concrete doesn’t fail overnight. It deteriorates quietly.

Water ingress, chemical exposure and freeze–thaw cycles slowly break down concrete structures. By the time visible cracking or spalling appears, deterioration is often already well advanced.

At UCL, we focus on asset refurbishment rather than replacement. Through the use of specialist coatings, structural repair mortars and protective lining systems, deteriorating concrete can be stabilised and protected for decades.

Our work includes:

• Concrete repairs and reinstatement
• High chemical resistance protective coatings
• Waterproofing and leak sealing systems
• Tank and containment linings
• Structural strengthening solutions

These systems are regularly used in water infrastructure, industrial assets, containment structures and civil engineering projects, where durability and long-term protection are critical.

Refurbishing existing assets is often significantly faster and more cost-effective than full replacement, while extending operational life and reducing downtime.

If you’re responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure and want to understand the options for protecting and extending the life of concrete assets, we’re always happy to have a conversation.

What happens when a movie set's underwater filming tank starts leaking and breaking apart mid-production?

During a project for a major film production company, we discovered the concrete subfloor was crumbling beneath the water. The cause? The floor had been laid in the rain, and dry cement was thrown over the wet mix to speed up drying, leaving a powdery, structural failure underneath.

Rather than applying a temporary patch, our engineering team pivoted fast:

1. Diamond ground through the weak layer down to sound concrete.
2. Reinstated a level floor using a liquid-pumped screed.
3. Applied an epoxy primer and an automated 2mm robotic polyurea lining.

The result: NO leaks, pristine water clarity for camera work, and over a year of continuous underwater filming with zero downtime.

Rapid structural remediation completed within 48 hours.

UCL was called to Rodbourne after failed grout seals around balance tank inlet pipes created a risk of leakage and downtime.

Our team removed defective material, formed keyed repair areas, installed hydrophilic sealant around the pipe penetrations, and reinstated the junctions using DWI-approved cementitious repair materials.

Delaminated wall sections were also stripped back to restore a more uniform, structurally sound finish.

Once complete, the tank was washed, chlorinated, and cleaned of legacy staining from previous works, helping return the asset to service safely and efficiently.

UCL provides specialist structural repair, leak sealing, and asset refurbishment solutions for water infrastructure.
