Purton Barn Woodcrafts & Shepherd Huts We create beautiful shepherd huts and unique wooden living spaces. Established 2012, follow for inspiration, our latest projects and more.

Everything we make uses reclaimed materials for sustainable new buildings that come with built-in character. Hi, we're a team of skilled carpenters and traditional craftsman creating unique wooden buildings and specialising in complete-package shepherd huts. Senior project manager Cristian has many years’ experience working with wood; from small restoration projects right up to full construction a

nd fit-out of large oak frame two store buildings. We construct, fit out and finish unique four-season Shepherd huts with full accommodation with a range of exterior and interior finishes. You can see some of our projects in the photos on this page, huts are made as one-off unique styles and also customised to your own layout and design. Furniture, bathroom and kitchen elements are all custom fitted and we take pride in creating something that is both beautiful and well-made at every stage. Electrics are professionally installed and signed off, and huts are supplied ready to connect to water and drainage. Shepherd huts have become a wonderful hideaway, a holiday rental or a private place to read, relax and think. They can be located in a shady corner for a cosy retreat or in an open spot with a view for an on-site holiday house. Farming margins are getting tighter every year. BPS is gone, input costs aren't coming down, and most farms are being told to diversify without being told how.

Apprentice update: two weeks in with Toby 👊

This fortnight Toby has been on insulation, learning why a well built hut starts from the base up.

Cutting, fitting and securing the insulation boards between the joists, making sure every gap is sealed before the floor goes down.

It's not the glamorous bit, but it's the bit that keeps a hut warm, quiet and cheap to run all year round. Get it wrong here and you feel it every winter.

Plenty learnt. Plenty more to go.

There's something about rain on a tin roof that makes a shepherd's hut feel like the safest place in the world. 🌧️

Outside: grey skies, rain streaking down the glass, the fields gone soft and silver. Inside: warm timber, soft lighting, the quiet hum of a wood burner doing its job. That contrast is exactly why we build these huts the way we do.

It's easy to make somewhere feel nice on a sunny day, the real test is whether it still feels like a retreat when the weather turns. A good shepherd's hut should make you want to be inside looking out, not stuck inside wishing you weren't.

Saddened to hear that Red Sky Shepherd's Huts have ceased trading this month. They were hut leaders and we've looked up to them for years. 😢

Red Sky were one of Britain’s finest hut builders; a family company with a high level of craftsmanship. It's a genuine loss for all of us in the industry and we owe them for a boom in interest in Shepherd Huts after they crafted David Cameron's hut 10 years ago.

Our huts just don't have to be used for accommodation. You can utilise them how you wish, whether an art studio, a garden gym, an office or even posh bar!
