Really happy with how this crane overhaul is coming together. A fair bit of work has gone into stripping things back, carrying out repairs and upgrades, and getting everything back together looking the part.

Still plenty to do, but it’s always satisfying when you start to see the finished job taking shape. 👌

And what a night to be working on it! 🌅 Couldn’t ask for a better view while getting the job done.

A busy one this week at Haywood Engineering, with one of the jobs this portable/towable field shelter fabricated in the workshop and installed on site this morning.

Designed to be moved around the croft as needed, it gives a handy bit of shelter while keeping everything sturdy and practical. 💪

We’ve also managed to have the oldest and youngest members of the family on the tools this week! 👴👧

Jess was keen to get involved, although we did run into one slight problem… she couldn’t quite reach the high bits! 😂 So between the two of us, we eventually managed to get the job done!

It’s always good to get the family involved and pass a few skills on along the way. ❤️

Another job finished and ready for plenty of use around the croft!

We’re currently involved in the fabrication of a new bridge, giving a local farmer safe and reliable access across the d**e and into his field.

It’s been a great job to get stuck into, with plenty of heavy steelwork, fabrication and preparation going into making sure this bridge is built to do the job for years to come. 💪🔩

And it’s not just the younger generation getting involved… 😂

My 76-year-old granda is always looking for an excuse to get his hands dirty and help out wherever he can! Here he is giving the beams a good coat of undercoat for me. 👨‍🔧🎨

Absolutely brilliant having him around the workshop — although I’m not sure if he’s helping me or just making sure I’m doing it right! 😂

It’s been another busy few weeks carrying out a variety of engineering and maintenance work across the Highlands.

Some of the recent work has included:
✅ Replacement of wear plates on a mixing plant.
✅ Pipework replacements and alterations.
✅ Fabrication and installation of new pipe supports.
✅ General mechanical maintenance and site repairs.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with us yesterday at the Sutherland Show . It was brilliant to meet so many people throughout the day. We had some great conversations, made some new contacts, caught up with familiar faces and hopefully opened the door to a few future opportunities. Days like this remind you how important it is to get out there and meet people face to face.

The drill challenge created plenty of laughs and a bit of friendly competition all while raising money for a great cause - £85.90 for Mikeysline. Every penny will go towards supporting the amazing work they do.

A big thank you as well to everyone involved in organising the show. It takes a huge amount of work behind the scenes to put on an event like that, and it was great to be part of it.

We’ll definitely be back next year… bigger, better and with even more to show! 💪

🏆 Drill at Arm’s Length Challenge – We Have a Winner! 🏆

A huge thank you to everyone who took on our ‘Drill at Arm’s Length’ Challenge in support of Mikeysline. We loved seeing so many people give it their best shot (and discovering just how heavy a drill feels after a few minutes!).

👏 Congratulations to our official winner, Steven McKinnon, who held on for 3 minutes 21 seconds! A fantastic effort and a very well-deserved win! 🎉

We also have to give a mention to one competitor, Sutherland, who arrived fashionably late…and actually recorded a time that would have just topped the leaderboard! As the challenge had officially closed, we couldn’t count the result…come along next year for another chance to win 💪

Yesterday took Haywood Engineering over to the stunning west coast for an urgent repair job on a trawler before she headed back to sea that afternoon.

The ramp wear plates had started to deteriorate, which had started catching and ripping the fishing nets. After carrying out the necessary weld repairs, the vessel was able to get away on schedule ready for her next stint at sea.

It’s jobs like these that show how important a fast turnaround can be. Every hour a working vessel is tied up costs money, so getting our customers back up and running as quickly as possible is always the priority.

I certainly can’t complain about the office yesterday either… blue skies, calm seas and some of the best views Scotland has to offer! ☀️🏔️

A local building company dropped this used shipping container off on Friday afternoon with a tight deadline – they needed it transformed into a smoking shelter and ready for site first thing Monday morning.

The job included:
✅ Removing the original container doors
✅ Cutting and framing new window openings
✅ Straightening dents and damaged panels
✅ Preparing and repainting the container
✅ Ready for delivery back to site on Monday morning

Keeping busy in the workshop fabricating this new access platform as part of an ongoing crane upgrade.

The platform has been designed to provide safer and easier access for the crane operator during operations, helping improve both safety and usability on site.

Projects like this are a great example of the variety involved in the work I do, combining steel fabrication with my mechanical and hydraulic skill set to create a practical solution that fits the equipment and the way it’s used day to day.

Another custom build taking shape, and I’m looking forward to sharing the finished installation soon.
