There can be quite a lot going on in one layshaft.

With gears and splines combined on the same component, there’s plenty to get right.

We can partially or fully machine layshafts to customer drawings, with finish grinding for greater accuracy and spark or wire erosion available for more involved features.

Having those processes in-house means fewer stages need to be outsourced, giving our customers a simpler route from drawing to finished layshaft.

Another gear getting the VIPER treatment!

Our Höfler VIPER 500K is rarely short of work, with gears regularly making their way onto the machine for the grinding stage of production.

It plays a big part in our gear grinding capacity, particularly when there are repeat batches, tight tolerances and production schedules to keep moving.

Dog rings have a pretty important job inside a racing gearbox, providing the positive engagement needed as the driver moves from one gear to the next.

And Marina Bay will give them plenty to do in Singapore this weekend!

With braking, acceleration and gear changes coming thick and fast around the street circuit, they’ll be put to work lap after lap.

It’s exactly the sort of job we know well, manufacturing dog rings to customer designs and producing the different spline forms required.

For years, we’ve supported Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to the defence primes, manufacturing precision gears, splines and transmission components for programmes across air, land and sea.

That can mean anything from one-off and development work through to repeat production, with gear cutting, grinding, turning, milling and inspection all handled within our UK facilities.

And as a 𝗝𝗢𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗥-𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿, we’re already familiar with the standards and supply chain requirements that come with working in the defence sector. 👍

Ooh, what a pair! 👀

This threaded plug and ring gauge set has been manufactured for an oil & gas application, and there’s a fair bit of work sitting behind those threads.

When you’re producing a gauge set that will be used to verify both sides of a threaded connection, the thread form, pitch and lead need to be bang on.

After all, these are the tools that will ultimately decide whether those mating threads are within spec!

Components like these are going to have their work cut out at Bahrain this weekend!

Long straights into heavy braking zones, followed by hard acceleration out of slow corners, mean drivers are constantly working down through the gears and quickly back up them again.

Multiply that across 57 laps and there’s a lot being asked of the components sitting inside an F1 gearbox, with repeated load changes and every gear needing to engage exactly as intended.

One thing’s for sure, Sakhir won't give the gearbox much of an easy ride!

There was a time when you wouldn’t find a Höfler gear grinding machine anywhere in the UK.

But that changed when we became the first company to bring one into the country!

It was a big investment in our gear manufacturing capability at the time, and one that has certainly stood the test of time. We’ve since added a second Höfler, with both now earning their keep on the shop floor at Tamworth. 👏

The early bird catches the worm, apparently…

And as we’re early risers, we’ve already got a few of them on the go this morning, and by that, we mean worm shafts of course!

There’s a lot that needs to be right on a part like this. The form, pitch and lead all have a direct bearing on how the shaft meshes with the worm wheel and ultimately how the gear set runs.

Get those right and you’re looking at controlled tooth contact, smooth transmission of motion and consistent performance across the gear set. 💪
