Wonderfully simple image showing what can be achieved with a great team and a lot of hard work, plus some generous funding! Unfortunately it also highlights the task ahead to get Tone works removed from the "at risk register". The more awareness this amazing building receives the better chance it has of this being achieved so spread the word wide.

Second of our Gloucester West gate street projects is now complete. The Dick Whittingtons reputed to have links to Richard Whittington himself dates back to the 13th century behind this Georgian facade. We have carried out sympathetic repairs to the facade, which include re-pointing, new masonry, structural works, timber repairs and decorations as well as a strip and re-cover of the roof that is hidden behind the false gable. Internally there has been a new M&E installation and extensive lime plastering. These works provide new purpose for what was otherwise an unused 1st floor.

Such a beautiful day to share you the finished Welsh Slate roof at Toneworks, Wellington.
Having overcome all sorts of difficulties on site, our carpentry team and roofers have delivered this fantastic neat job within a very tight time scale, we are really proud of them. Bravos!

Work at the Folk Of Gloucester is now complete and the results are really pleasing. The building had been neglected for years and many inappropriate interventions had to be overcome and reversed, to secure its future. This along with a forward thinking organisation and new colour scheme really puts this stunning building back on the map as a focal point of West Gate Street in the heart of old Gloucester. Working in this part of the country doesn't throw up many buildings of this nature so it has been a real honour for us to be involved!

We were asked to make this beautiful window safe for a family with children, who live in this historical building. We created a perspex screen that provides a barrier between the living space and glass, without distracting from the visual impact of the window itself.

It's shocking to see the degree of rot that was present in the piece of structural timber that was part of the roof at the Toneworks in Wellington. Our job as conservators is to increase the lifespan of a building by identifying parts that are failing, and replacing them like for like.

Here's a little taster of some architectural design that our architect George has done for a client. The brief was to design a pottery studio to be built in the garden behind the house. George worked with the client to incorporate the elements that were important whilst making the most of the views.
George's thoughts on the design:
'The site has several interesting challenges, notably the steepness! However, I believe that we can use these challenges to positive effect, so that the studio makes the most of the views out, the southerly aspect, and the north light. With this in mind, I sense an organic form that hugs the hillside and made predominantly from natural materials, will produce some delightful and practical spaces both internally and externally.'

When you look at picture 1 you might think that this building is beyond repair. Here at Corbel we are passionate about preserving our built heritage and our carpentry team is specially trained to breath new life into buildings like this. Picture 2 and 3 show how the structural timbers are being repaired one by one so this Grade || listed factory can be preserved for generations to come.

Out with the EML and cement and in with this lovely straw and lime mix on to oak laths which we have fitted to match the original pattern. The cement was trapping and channelling moisture into the magnificent medieval timber frame of The Folk of Gloucester, which of course had resulted in decay to the structural timbers. This reversal and the additions of some protective flashing's will protect the fabric and building for many more years to come.

Too warm for a scarf surely! Sorry couldn't resist the pun. Great progress from the Corbel Conservation Ltd carps team this week on site at Toneworks ——The huge structural repairs are now going in over.
Our in house carpentry team doing us proud with the highest levels of quality being produced under very difficult circumstances. The images don't really do justice to the size of some of these timbers, one of the replacements as an example is over 11 meters in length. Skills like these will soon be very hard to come by so it gives me a sense of great pride to know we are helping to keep them alive.
