Congratulations to our site supervisor Trevor on successfully completing his NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction).

This is a great achievement and recognises Trevor’s knowledge and commitment to supervising works safely, effectively and to a high standard within the construction environment.

At Taunton Fabs, we are always proud to see our team continuing to develop their skills and formal qualifications, supporting both individual progression and the standards we deliver across our projects.

Oliver’s work placement – Week 3

Last Friday marked Oliver’s third day with us at Taunton Fabs and he spent the day in our Design Department.

Oliver had chosen to create his own bespoke shelving project, so the day focused on taking his idea and developing it into a workable CAD design. With guidance from one of our designers, Michael, Oliver created an assembly model and the individual parts needed for the shelving.

Learning design skills, problem-solving, and attention to detail at this stage will be valuable for any future career in engineering and manufacturing.

This week, he’ll begin bringing the design to life in the workshop.

More balconies being fitted in Bristol for Crest Nicholson plc at the ongoing Harry Stoke site.

Our team have been installing more pre-assembled posted balconies this week using our own lorry-mounted crane, helping keep the lift and installation controlled, efficient and well planned.

Great to see another balcony package taking shape on site.

Another completed balcony package for Vistry Group this time at the Undy site in Monmouthshire.

Our scope included posted balconies, staircore balustrading and wall handrails, all delivered by the Taunton Fabs team from design through to installation.

Posted balcony systems are a practical solution for residential schemes, particularly where additional structural support is needed to safely distribute loads while still providing residents with usable outdoor space.

This project is another strong example of our team delivering designed, manufactured and installed metalwork for new housing developments.

Oliver’s second day with us at Taunton Fabrications and things got creative in the workshop.

As part of his 6-week work placement through Young Somerset, Oliver spent time with one of our most experienced welder/fabricators, learning more about shaping, forming, heating, finishing and the patience that goes into working with steel.

The result? A pretty impressive solid metal snake!

It was a great hands-on exercise, giving Oliver the chance to see how basic techniques, workshop guidance and a bit of imagination can turn a length of steel bar into something completely different. A brilliant way to build confidence, learn safely and get a real feel for fabrication.

At Capital Park in Cambridge, we delivered three feature staircases for Wates Group, combining structural steelwork with timber finishes and integrated LED lighting in coordination with The Light Lab.

A great example of early design coordination, off-site pre-assembly and clear communication between trades.

It’s been great to welcome Oliver as part of a 6-week work placement through Young Somerset

Oliver has joined us one day a week to learn more about welding, fabrication and life in a working manufacturing environment. Before stepping into the workshop, his first day focused on the important foundations including Abrasive Wheels awareness and Manual Handling, helping him understand that good fabrication starts with working safely and properly.

He then spent time alongside one of our most experienced welders, getting hands-on with a fun steel structure project and seeing first-hand how tools, welding and workshop skills come together.

It’s brilliant to see young people showing an interest in practical skills and engineering. Opportunities like this give them a real taste of the industry and help build confidence, awareness and ambition.

Well done Oliver a great start, and we look forward to seeing how you progress.

Investing in accuracy and efficiency.

Taunton Fabs has recently invested in a Leica BLK360 surveying system. This investment forms part of our wider digital transformation journey, using technology to strengthen the link between site, design, fabrication and installation.

The Leica BLK360 is a compact 3D laser scanner that quickly captures a site in detail. It scans the space, records millions of measurement points, and creates a digital 3D point cloud of the building or area. For complex architectural metalwork, accurate survey data is critical.

The ability to capture existing site conditions in detail helps us:
✅ improve design accuracy
✅ reduce clashes and assumptions
✅ support better coordination with the wider project team
✅ improve confidence before fabrication begins
✅ streamline installation planning

Our designer Sam has already been putting the system to work on site at Bridgend College for Willmott Dixon, capturing detailed site information to support the next stages of design and fabrication.
