It’s always good to see our work taking shape a little closer to home.

Taunton Fabs have recently completed these replacement balconies as part of the Firepool development right here in the county town of Somerset.

The new balconies combine a steel frame with vertical bar infill balustrading with handrail, all galvanized and powder coated providing a clean, robust finish that sits comfortably with the existing brick façade while restoring safe and usable external space for residents.

Projects like this may be smaller in scale than some of the major schemes passing through our workshops, but they still rely on the same attention to detail, from survey and design through manufacture, finishing and installation. And there’s something particularly satisfying about completing work that our own team can drive past and see in our home town of Taunton.

Long weekend incoming… and this looks like a pretty good spot to enjoy it!

Sometimes the best architectural metalwork is the metalwork you barely notice. Balcony balustrades have a simple job on paper, to provide safe edge protection. In reality, they also have to work with the architecture, maintain views and daylight, withstand years of exposure and look right as part of the finished building.

The combination of glass and relatively minimal supporting steelwork here keeps the balconies feeling open while providing the required protection without dominating the façade. It’s a good example of how the smaller details can make a significant difference to the finished appearance of a building.

A different perspective of one of the feature stairs at the University of Bristol's Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) that we completed for Sir Robert McAlpine

In just a few weeks, this view will look very different. The building will open its doors to up to 4,600 students, with this feature stair becoming part of their everyday journey through the new campus.

After seeing it progress from design to fabrication, through installation and finishing, it’s great to now see the stair within the completed space and ready to become part of a building that will be used by thousands of students, staff and visitors for many years to come.

Proud to have played our part in delivering such a prominent feature for this landmark Bristol project.

Works progressing on site at Cornwall College, St Austell

Our architectural metalwork package for BAM UK & Ireland is continuing to take shape at Cornwall College, with installation progressing across this busy live site.

The package includes a substantial range of external steelwork, including walkways, ramps, stair structures, terraces, balustrades, handrails and associated guarding across the college buildings and external areas. The photos show one of the main external stair and walkway sections progressing well, combining galvanised structural steelwork with powder-coated balustrading and stainless-steel handrails.

Working within a live construction environment requires careful coordination across design, manufacture, delivery and installation, so it’s great to see another sizeable package coming together on site for BAM, continuing our strong and long-standing working relationship.

We were delighted to recently welcome Harrison to Taunton Fabrications for a 10-day T Level Industry Placement.

Working alongside our Design team, Harrison gained hands-on experience in 3D CAD modelling, surveying and engineering design, whilst also joining our regular coordination meetings and gaining a real insight into a busy engineering environment. It was great to see his confidence and technical ability develop, progressing from initial CAD exercises to contributing to practical design activities.

Supporting the next generation of engineers is important to us. Giving young people the opportunity to experience our industry first-hand and learn from experienced people is an investment in its future.

We wish Harrison every success with his T Level studies and his future career in engineering.

A look back at a great Feature Stair project in Exeter.

A few photos from our work at the Living Systems Institute, University of Exeter, delivered with BAM UK & Ireland and Hawkins Brown Architects

Our package included the feature staircases, balustrading and handrails, with the architectural steelwork becoming a prominent part of the finished building. This project is also a great example of our long-standing relationship with BAM, a relationship that continues today with Taunton Fabs currently working alongside BAM on a number of live projects.

Always good to look back at completed projects while continuing to build on relationships that have lasted many years.

🤖 Putting our cobot to work

Our collaborative robot welder has been busy recently, producing hundreds of first-fix brackets for the University of Exeter project, Bouygues Construction UK.

This type of repetitive, high-volume fabrication is ideally suited to the cobot. Once programmed, it delivers consistent weld quality, repeatable accuracy and improved production efficiency across every component.
It also allows our skilled fabricators to focus on more complex work while the cobot handles the repetitive welding process.

Setting the Standard Before Manufacture.

Our team has completed this full-scale control sample for YTL Developments (UK) Limited’s new office development at the former Filton Airfield in Bristol.
Producing a physical sample at this stage gives the wider project team the opportunity to review the design, interfaces, appearance and quality at full scale before manufacture of the main works begins.

A great job by our design, production and finishing teams. We look forward to seeing the full package progress.

More work completed at Imperial Park, Bristol, for Vistry Group, with this multi-flight stair core finished with powder-coated mild-steel bar infill balustrades and wall-mounted handrails.

The continuous handrails were fabricated using our in-house tube-bending machine, producing smooth, consistent bends and clean transitions throughout the stairwell.

Bar infill balustrading is the kind of architectural metalwork we deliver every day, but it is also where experience, accuracy and attention to detail really show. Simple in appearance, but only when it is done properly.
