T2 Alloys Limited

T2 Alloys Limited Supplier of Tungum, UNS 69100 & other alloys. Oil & gas, dive & marine industries & defence.

We are manufacturers of corrosion resistant tubing for pneumatic and hydraulic instrumentation system applications. Our product, Tungum tubing, is proven to deliver safety critical, long-lasting solutions in demanding environments across the world. With a proven track record, Tungum tubing provides a cost effective and reliable alternative to stainless and super duplex alloys. Its distinctive prop

erties and the team’s technical expertise ensures a risk free, on-time solution for a range of demanding, safety critical applications. Tungum tube was originally launched in the early 1930’s as a decorative alloy and soon became recognised as an excellent copper-based engineering alloy. From prior to World War II, right up to today it is a preferred material for many applications including the oil and gas industry, dive and marine applications and the defence sector. Tungum was introduced to the oil and gas industry in the 1970s when it proved more effective and long-lasting than stainless steels, particularly in terms of its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Stainless steels suffer from surface pitting corrosion as early as two years after installation, whereas Tungum resists the same corrosion process for significantly longer periods – demonstrating an installation life of up to 35 years. Also in the early 1970s Lloyds specified Tungum for use in oxygen lines on dive / hyperbaric systems for safety reasons and almost overnight, dive equipment manufacturers converted from stainless steel to Tungum on all dive system circuits. Tungum is ideal for these applications thanks to its non-sparking qualities. Tungum is approved and used by companies such as BP, Shell, Conoco Phillips, KBR & AMEC to name but a few.

🛑 Everyone defaults to 316 stainless steel for hydrogen systems. But should they?

The evidence is mounting, hydrogen can reduce fatigue life, accelerate crack growth, and increase embrittlement risk in 316 stainless steel. Meanwhile continues to demonstrate exceptional resistance to hydrogen uptake, fatigue degradation, and corrosion.

In hydrogen service "industry standard" doesn't always mean "best choice."

🛑 Is this controversial?

Everyone talks about 316 stainless steel as the “safe choice” for hydrogen systems. But the published evidence tells a more complicated story.

Under the very conditions hydrogen infrastructure is built for; high pressure, cyclic loading, welding, cold temperatures and long-term service, 316 has been shown to suffer measurable reductions in fatigue life, fracture toughness and crack resistance. Meanwhile continues to demonstrate exceptional resistance to hydrogen embrittlement, superior corrosion performance and excellent reliability in demanding offshore and cryogenic environments.

Is it time the industry stopped defaulting to stainless steel and started asking harder questions about material selection for hydrogen service?

What do you think? What is your experience?

🛑 Laboratory and field exposure testing in chloride environments demonstrate significantly reduced pit depth in compared with 316 stainless steels.

Why does this matter?

Iron-based alloys contain hydrogen “trap” sites that can promote embrittlement and degradation. Tungum’s homogeneous copper-based structure has extremely low hydrogen solubility and diffusivity, helping maintain mechanical integrity even under hydrogen exposure.

Sometimes the material choice matters more than the specification.

🛑 Hydrogen and 316 stainless steel are not always a safe long-term combination.

Pressure cycling, welding and cryogenic operation can all contribute to measurable degradation in stainless steels exposed to hydrogen.

Tungum by contrast, offers exceptionally low hydrogen solubility, strong fatigue resistance and outstanding corrosion performance, dramatically reducing embrittlement risk.

So... If we’re redesigning the world’s energy infrastructure for the future, why are we still specifying materials designed for the past?
