Before you get too far, mentally place the furniture.

If there’s a dining table, how much room will you need around it? If there’s a sofa, which way would you like it to face? Do you want to walk straight out into the garden or keep one part of the room more private?

Thinking about how the room will actually be used often makes the design decisions much clearer.

There’s much more to it than that.
