There’s a reason a great pub room feels different to a hotel room. They need character.✨

When the Punch team refurbished these guest rooms at The Ferry Boat, that’s exactly what we aimed to preserve.

We wanted to create a space where you walk in, drop your bag, and immediately feel at home.

Proper comfort, quality finishes, warm lighting, and real character.

It was a careful job ensuring the rooms still felt like part of the pub rather than something added on.

We believe we got it right. What do you think?

A renovation designed for family life🏡

We took this property right back to basics before bringing it forward into something fit for modern family life.

We opened up the space to refresh the social areas with a contemporary layout, while retaining the original character of the building and highlighting its gorgeous original features.

Great work team 👏

A throwback from the Punch archives.📸

A project we completed at Tymperleys Tea Rooms a few years back, working on a building that has been a part of Colchester’s history since the 1490s.

Our job was to carefully repair and safeguard it, so it can be enjoyed for many more years.

It’s always a pleasure to help preserve buildings like this.

A little round-up of a recent project in this stunning Grade II listed property ✨

The brief was simple: a complete refresh that respected the character of the building while giving it a modern feel.

One of the key challenges was the boot room, where damp was rising through the existing concrete floor. Our team carefully removed the concrete and replaced it with breathable limecrete, allowing moisture to escape naturally and protecting the long-term health of the building. We then laid a beautiful herringbone reclaimed brick floor, bringing both function and character back into the space.

Alongside this, a new kitchen was installed to better suit modern living, and we collaborated with Eco Electrical Group to upgrade and future-proof the home’s electrics.

A great example of how thoughtful, traditional methods and modern upgrades can work hand in hand to breathe new life into a historic home.

We recently worked on this beautiful period property in a Suffolk village, but, like many heritage homes, it required a bit of TLC to preserve its charm and character.

We carried out external repairs and redecoration to the façade, restoring the building’s crisp white exterior and replacing ‘out of place’ skylights with three traditional dormer windows

The chimney stack was also rebuilt using heritage brickwork techniques, ensuring both structural integrity and a finish in keeping with the surrounding historic fabric.

Now it’s ready to withstand family life in the village for generations to come. 🏡

We were recently asked to provide conservation repairs and repointing to a historic wall in Colchester; previously unknown to archaeologists.

Our role was to carefully stabilise and conserve it, using traditional lime mortars, rebuilding where necessary, and strengthening the structure with a combination of historic techniques and modern interventions where appropriate.

The sun is shining over Jumbo Water Tower.🌅

The water tower, ‘Jumbo’, was opened in 1883 to provide Colchester with clean water. It was decommissioned in the 1980s and, after decades of neglect, required urgent restoration.

Punch carried out essential repair works to the exterior of the historic Jumbo Water Tower using a specialist rope access team. Internally, we undertook exploratory works, upgraded the electrical supplies and lighting, and installed an internal scaffold staircase to provide safe access into the tank. The works were carried out in collaboration with , led by Ed Morton.

It was an honour to be part of this huge project to give Jumbo a new lease of life.

It’s not always buildings we work on.

At Beaumont Quay, a Scheduled Monument with a long maritime history, our work focused on restoring and protecting an important section of historic quay infrastructure.

Working for Essex County Council, the Punch team carried out works to reinstate the large stones that form the quay side, many of which had shifted or deteriorated over time.

Alongside reinstating the quay stones, we also undertook retention works to strengthen and secure the quay, helping to protect it from further movement and the natural pressures of its waterside environment.

It really is something different every day here at Punch.

A project we’re incredibly proud to have completed at St Mary’s Church, Henham.👏

This £1.8M project involved extensive reordering works within the Grade I listed church alongside the construction of a traditional flint and stone extension to create a new community space.

It was great to partner with and on this project.

It won’t be long now until the first warm days of spring arrive and everyone is clambering for a spot at the pub again 🍻☀️

That’s exactly what the transformation of the Ferry Boat Inn was designed for.

The Punch team carried out a full programme of works to breathe new life into the building, making it an essential part of community life. From a full structural extension of the pub to revamping six bedrooms.

The result is a space that feels bigger, more welcoming, and most importantly, stays true to the buildings original character.
