It's not often you get to waterproof a new-build church... thanks to the Maclennan team for the latest update on this interesting new project in Dorset.

MacLennan have been supporting the construction of the new church where external ground levels rise up to 620mm above the internal floor level, creating a partial retaining condition that demands a robust waterproofing approach.

Their CSSW-qualified surveyor collaborated closely with the design team to deliver a BS 8102:2022-compliant solution, ensuring long-term protection against water ingress and damp.

The on-site team is now nearing completion of the Type C cavity drain system across the large open-plan space, soon to be ready for public use.

Great work, MacLennan!

When specifying waterproofing systems, a key consideration is preventing water migration behind the membrane.

A fully bonded membrane creates a continuous barrier that adheres directly to the substrate, helping to stop water tracking.

HydroBond 2K-Flex is a two-component, liquid-applied bitumen/rubber waterproofing membrane that creates a seamless, fully bonded barrier that:
> Has no laps or joins
> Forms a thick, highly flexible waterproofing layer with excellent crack-bridging capability
> Is quick-drying and rain-fast after a short period
> Is radon gas certified for enhanced below-ground protection
> Can be applied by trowel or airless spray, helping to improve installation efficiency

A waterproofing membrane's performance is about more than resisting water ingress. The ability to remain bonded, flexible, and continuous throughout a structure's lifecycle is often critical to long-term waterproofing success.

Products such as HydroBond 2K-Flex demonstrate how liquid-applied membranes can provide protection, simplify installation, and reduce complexity, particularly on earth-retaining structures, basements, and foundation walls.

Hosted by Aimee, our experienced and CSSW qualified Design Team Project Manager, we will be presenting our most popular CPD, approved by the Royal Institute of British Architects, on 'Waterproofing Design Strategies to British Standard 8102:2022'.

The seminar is relevant to any professionals involved in below-ground construction, from architects and engineers to principal contractors and developers.

During the interactive presentation and Q&A, Aimee will provide a comprehensive overview of the modern methods available for protecting below-ground structures from water, including:

1️⃣ The different forms of structural waterproofing systems in the market
2️⃣ How to achieve the environmental grades outlined within British Standard 8102:2022
3️⃣ A focus on how combination waterproofing systems are specified in below-ground structures to achieve the desired internal environment

BELGRAVIA NEW-BUILD WATERPROOFING

This large new-build basement installation is in a prestigious residential development in the heart of Belgravia.

Designed to accommodate playrooms and a utility area, the below-ground space is being transformed into a completely dry and fully habitable environment thanks to a carefully engineered waterproofing solution by the Maclennan team.

Specified as a Grade 3 basement by the architect, this grade is the highest performance standard in BS 8102:2022 for residential basements, suitable for living and working spaces.

To meet this requirement, the MacLennan team developed a tailored waterproofing strategy that ensures long-term protection and comfort. The system includes:

> HydroCoat 104 Super - a crystalline slurry applied as the primary barrier to resist water ingress.
> CDM System - a full cavity drain membrane system installed across all internal walls and floors.
> Titan-Pro - a specialist sump and pump system to actively manage and remove any water that enters the structure.

With the structural work complete, the basement is now ready to be handed over to the client for final finishes, bringing this elegant and functional space to life.

Cementitious Waterproofing: A Guide...

As one of the most popular methods for protecting structures against water, understanding the benefits, intricacies and challenges of cementitious waterproofing systems can be crucial for achieving a successful installation.

Cementitious waterproofing systems utilise specially formulated cement-based compounds, often combined with advanced polymers to create a robust barrier against water pe*******on.

Often referred to as “tanking,” the tremendous bond strength and ease of application of these cement-based slurries is what makes them so successful and popular. Consequently, they are utilised to provide effective protection to a wide range of structures:

BUILDING ELEMENTS:
> Basements and foundations
> Podium decks
> Balconies and terraces
> Flat roofs

WATER RETAINING STRUCTURES:
> Reservoirs and water tanks
> Sewage treatment plants
> Swimming pools
> Underground vaults

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
> Chemical storage areas
> Processing facilities
> Areas exposed to seawater
> High traffic zones

Overall, the benefits of cementitious waterproofing include:
✅ Strong adhesion to concrete and masonry
✅ Durable, long-lasting protection against water pressure
✅ Easy to apply by brush, roller, spray, or trowel
✅ Suitable for both new-build and refurbishment projects

The key to performance? Proper surface preparation, correct application thickness, and allowing adequate curing time. When installed correctly, cementitious waterproofing provides reliable protection and helps safeguard the long-term integrity of a structure.

World Environment Day 2026 🌍

Friday was World Environment Day, a day for raising awareness and taking action on critical environmental issues.

We are proud to have been recycling plastics within the waterproofing industry since 2017, thanks to our recycling service and our specialist contractors.

Since its inception, we've achieve some amazing figures:
♻️ We've recycled over 27 tonnes of plastic
🌿 Avoiding the emission of more than 31 tonnes of CO2e
🌍 Through the collection of 1,275 bags of recycling (and counting...)

Sustainability is also embedded into our product development and sourcing. Eight of our products already hold Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) with more to come. A further three products in our leading cavity drain waterproofing system are manufactured from 100% recycled plastic, whilst still holding BBA certification.

By ensuring our products have independently verified environmental data, we can support specifiers to make informed decisions on their own sustainable building practices.

World Environment Day isn't just a singe day of action, it's a commitment to a strategy that protects our future planet.

Another new-build waterproofing project on the go with the Maclennan waterproofing team 👀

This new-build, semi-basement has been designed as a habitable space, classified as a Grade 3 environment under BS 8102:2022, meaning there's no tolerance for water ingress.

To achieve this, two forms of protection are being installed.

First, a Type A system has been applied to all retaining and ground-bearing elements, providing a robust barrier against moisture.

Next, a Type C system has been installed, which will channel any water ingress safely, ensuring long-term protection.

For drainage, the client has opted for gravity discharge, directing water either to a soakaway (minimum 5m from the property) or into surface water drainage, always confirmed by a drainage engineer.

Great work, Team MacLennan!
