Entering the final stages of this combined waterproofing project, expertly installed by our specialist contractor Harris Calnan.

Having already benefitted from a full Newton Type A barrier protection system, Harris Calnan are now installing the CDM System - a failsafe internal cavity drain solution, and the last line of defence against water ingress.

Cavity drain, or Type C, waterproofing is a comprehensive and maintainable waterproofing solution. Usually suggested as one of the forms of waterproofing where a completely dry and habitable space is required, it provides superior protection for below-ground or retaining structures.

The CDM System comprises of cavity drain membranes (approved by the British Board of Agrément), drainage channels, specialist sump and pump systems, and industry-leading battery back-up and remote monitoring.

Why does primer matter when applying a cementitious waterproofing membrane?

The performance of a cementitious waterproofing system can depend heavily on the condition and preparation of the substrate.

Before applying cement-based, Type A waterproofing membranes, HydroCoat 903 Primer is used to help prepare the surface and promote adhesion between the substrate and the subsequent cementitious coating.

Good substrate preparation helps to:
- Improve adhesion of the waterproofing membrane
- Reduce the risk of poor bonding or delamination
- Create a more consistent surface for application
- Support the long-term performance of the waterproofing system

As shown in the installation photo, the substrate should be appropriately prepared, clean and free from contaminants that could affect adhesion.

The primer isn't an 'extra step', it's part of preparing the substrate for the waterproofing system to perform as intended.

Cavity drain waterproofing can be one of the most failsafe and reliable solutions for delivering a completely dry below-ground space during a basement refurbishment.

Perfectly demonstrated by specialist contractor Maclennan, who are installing the CDM system in an existing basement in Devon.

The client, wanting to refurbish their basement, requested a full survey and expert advice on the most suitable waterproofing solution to bring the space up to current standards and to comply with building regulations.

Whilst the space was previously 'waterproofed' by another company in 2010, no drawings, documents, or guarantees were available. The original channels were also in the wrong place, and the pumps used were insufficient for the job.

MacLennan's experienced team are now completely reinstalling the system up to their own high standards, fully guaranteed and covered by their £10 million PI insurance, providing the client with complete peace of mind.

How do we know which injection resin to select for a project?

Injection resins provide a durable solution for stopping water ingress through cracks, construction joints or other defects in below-ground concrete.

But selecting the correct injection resin for the task is crucial to this process.

The right resin depends on several factors:
> The severity and volume of water ingress
> Whether the crack or joint is static or subject to movement
> The size and depth of the defect
> The condition of the surrounding concrete
> Environmental conditions, including temperature and chemical exposure

So what options are available to us?

Injection resins can be broadly divided into three categories:
1️⃣ Leak stemming – High-foaming resins that react quickly with water to stem and control high volumes of water ingress.

2️⃣ Leak sealing – Low-viscosity, non-foaming resins designed to pe*****te deeper into cracks, joints and voids to create a more permanent seal.

3️⃣ Hybrid – Resins that combine the properties of both, allowing them to stem water flow while also penetrating into the defect to provide a longer-term seal.

In some applications, more than one resin may be required. For example, a high-foaming polyurethane resin can initially be used to control an active leak, followed by a low-viscosity resin to complete the permanent seal.

This is why resin selection should be based on the specific conditions of the defect, rather than simply choosing a resin based on the presence of water.

Correct material selection, preparation and application are all essential to achieving a successful injection repair.

Why use an injection hose to seal construction joints in a Type B waterproofing system?

Construction joints are one of the areas of a concrete structure where water ingress is a higher risk. Even when concrete is designed and placed correctly, cracks, capillaries, pores and areas of honeycombing can provide potential pathways for water.

This is where an injection hose system can provide an additional level of protection.

HydroTank 302 Injection Hose is installed within the construction joint before the adjoining section of concrete is placed, with injection ports and pipes secured within the steel rebar.

Once the concrete structure is poured and cured, the hose is injected with a specialist water sealing injection resin under pressure. The pressure causes the resin to push out of micro-ports all over the injection hose, filling and sealing any cracks, capillaries, pores and areas of honeycombing around the construction joint. This makes it ideal for:

> Construction joints in earth-retaining and water-retaining structures
> Concrete walls, rafts and slabs
> Slab-to-wall interfaces
> Post-construction joint sealing
> Areas where poorly compacted concrete has created voids around construction joints

The result? A Type B waterproofing solution designed to seal the full construction joint, rather than simply protecting a small area in the centre of the joint.

Understanding how different joint sealing methods work is an important part of correctly designing and specifying below-ground waterproofing systems.
