Landfill capacity is tightening. EfW capacity is under pressure. And waste operators across the UK are facing fewer options for residual waste.

Recent reports of landfill sites reaching capacity in the North of England have reportedly removed at least one million tonnes of capacity from the market. In Scotland, waste handlers are facing their own capacity pressures, with both landfill and EfW routes under strain.

But this isn't simply a question of building more capacity.

It's about making better use of the capacity we already have, and creating more flexibility in what happens to residual waste.

Reducing mass. Stabilising organic material. Separating recoverable fractions. Preparing waste for more appropriate downstream routes.

When capacity is constrained, changing the material itself can create more options.

Too much of the conversation around decarbonisation focuses on the easy wins. But some of the biggest emissions challenges still come from waste streams that are considered too difficult, too contaminated or too costly to process effectively.

That's where biotechnology can make a measurable difference.

By stabilising organic-rich residual waste before disposal or recovery, biotechnology can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower reliance on landfill, and create cleaner feedstocks for recycling, recovery or alternative fuel pathways.

Reducing single-use plastics is vital to the world’s future because it tackles waste at source, cutting long-lasting pollution that overwhelms ecosystems, infrastructure and recycling systems.

But while reduction at source is essential, it is only part of the picture. There is still a significant volume of plastic in hard to handle waste streams that cannot be recycled in the conventional way.

Materials such as nappies, sanitary products and contaminated washroom waste have historically been sent to landfill or energy-from-waste because conventional recycling processes are unable to manage them effectively.

Through our work with Go4Greener in Derby, biotechnology is already helping to address this challenge. Together, we are transforming offensive washroom waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), creating a practical alternative to landfill and recovering value from one of the sector’s most challenging waste streams.

Reducing plastic waste will always be essential, but building a more sustainable waste system also means developing better solutions for the materials already in circulation and those that fall outside traditional recycling routes.

What if waste could clean itself?

That's essentially the principle behind Advetec's XO technology. Instead of relying on slow natural processes, it accelerates nature through biotechnology.

The system uses a blend of naturally occurring bacteria to break down organic material in non-recyclable waste. Through an aerobic rapid digestion process, those bacteria do the heavy lifting to break down contaminants.

The result is a faster, more practical way to treat waste streams that would otherwise be difficult to handle. For businesses, this turns a stubborn operational challenge into something more manageable and measurable.

Net Zero Week provides an important opportunity to focus attention on decarbonisation and the practical changes needed across industry, particularly as organisations set increasingly ambitious climate targets.

However, as the term “net zero” becomes more widely used, there is also a growing risk that it loses meaning through vague targets, inconsistent measurement and sustainability claims that are difficult to substantiate against real operational activity.
