CORONAVIRUS UPDATE
As you all know by now, Covid-2019 is an enveloped coronavirus...
Unlike Norovirus, enveloped viruses are extremely easy to deactivate.
Viruses do not stay airborne and will only spread for a certain distance from the source of a sneeze. In the case of measles (Rubeola virus) this can be up to 30m from the source, with Covid-19 the distance is thought to be significantly less (around 2m). Viruses require living host cells to remain active, outside of these host cells they remain infectious for a limited time-span. We do not have enough information for Covid-19, however the data that we do have suggests that this could be anywhere between 3 and 5 days. The quantity of infectious material will be dramatically reduced within 72 hours.
NHS guidelines recommend the following:
Frequent hand washing, elbow to finger-tip with soap and hot water (2x Happy Birthday) is the best approach (Safehands Premier/Safe Shield Handwash are ideal).
Sanitisers should be used when there is no access to a sink (sanitisers are not necessary if hands are being washed frequently).
The NHS recommends 60% Alcohol sanitisers as alcohol sanitisers are commonly available and cost-effective.
Due to the very limited resistance that enveloped viruses such as Covid-19 have to all disinfectant products, there is no doubt that alcohol gels work. The same is true of quat-based sanitisers such as Enduro.
However, alcohol evaporates rapidly and does not therefore, provide any residual effect. Conversely, quat-based sanitisers (such as Enduro), will deliver long-term residual biocidal efficacy. In the case of Enduro this residual effect can last up to 4 hours.
Although Covid-19 is not currently available for testing at commercial laboratories, Enduro has been tested to BS:EN14476 against H1N1 (a similar coronavirus to Covid-19).
As Bacticlean, Bacticlean XTRA, FAD and Bacteria X are all quat-based, they too will have residual biocidal efficacy when used as surface disinfectants.
