Young Engineers | The Next Generation
This week, we were delighted to welcome Edward (Ed) to Agriemach for work experience as he prepares for his second year of A-Levels and starts thinking about that all-important university choice.
With a clear interest in engineering, Ed spent time gaining an insight into the world of power generation and exhaust gas aftertreatment technology. We covered everything from fuel types, mass flow and temperatures through to catalyst technologies, control systems, mechanical drawings and wiring schematics. Enough information to overwhelm most people, yet Ed took it all in his stride and impressed us with the quality of his questions throughout.
Of course, engineering isn't just about what happens behind a desk. Once the theory was covered, it was time for a site visit. Standing in front of megawatts of installed power certainly puts drawings and specifications into perspective. Everything looks a lot smaller on paper!
What struck us most was just how much Ed enjoyed the experience. It was also a timely reminder not to take what we do for granted. The knowledge we apply every day has been built over many years, but most of us can remember those early days of standing next to a power plant for the first time, watching it start up and feeling that unmistakable surge of excitement.
If the next generation of engineers is anything like Ed, the future is in safe hands.
