Ten years ago, I posted that we were exporting a few pallets of Sound Damped Steel to China.

At the time, I was nervous that our product might be copied, and several people commenting on the post shared the same concern.

This week, we are sending 24,000 kg of SDS sheets to that same customer—an order that is now repeated most months.

From a few pallets to regular 24-tonne shipments. Not bad for a small North East manufacturing company!

A very proud moment for everyone involved at Sound Damped Steel.

🔊 Scrap Chute Noise Reduced by 97%

We recently completed a retrofit on a steel processor’s scrap chute that was producing high impact “ringing” noise.

By fitting 2mm Sound Damped Steel laminated dampers to the chute panels, we achieved:

✔ 15 dB(A) reduction
✔ Approximately 97% reduction in sound energy
✔ Noticeably calmer working environment

Unlike foam or lining materials, our solution works by stopping vibration at the source — preventing the steel panels from resonating when scrap hits them.

This type of solution is ideal for:
• Recycling plants
• Steel processors
• Conveyors
• Waste handling systems

If you’re battling impact noise in your facility, get in touch.

Noise reduction you can see as well as hear.

This video shows the vibration and noise response of untreated metal versus Sound Damped Steel — with the vibration graph running in real time alongside the footage.

The difference isn’t subtle.
Lower vibration. Faster decay. Quieter systems.

If you’re designing machinery and struggling with noise or resonance, this is what effective constrained layer damping looks like in practice.
