🎓 Celebrating the Rasbash Lecture legacy

The IFE Rasbash Lecture recognises individuals whose work have shaped the fire sector and advanced global fire safety knowledge. Over the coming weeks we will be highlighting some of the distinguished Rasbash Medal recipients and their contributions to the sector. IFE members also have the opportunity to view the lectures on the IFE CPD Hub to learn more about the winner's chosen presentation topic and develop their own learning around the subject.

đź’ˇ 2014 Rasbash Medal winner Dr. John de Ris is our first spotlight. Held at Edinburgh University, Dr, de Ris' lecture was entitled 'Radiation and incomplete combustion of buoyant turbulent diffusion flames.' and explored the complex dynamics of fire behaviour. It provided a powerful example of how scientific research continues to shape real-world fire safety practices.

Key learning opportunities:
🔥 The role of radiation in fire spread between materials and structures
đź’¨ Why incomplete combustion leads to more dangerous by-products like carbon monoxide
🌏 How flame behaviour changes in real-world (non-ideal) conditions

A deeper understanding of fire dynamics allows engineers to design safer buildings, improve suppression strategies, and better predict fire development.

A compliance-based approach alone may not be enough to fully address fire risk in today’s built environment

In this insightful article, Stenhouse MSc MIFireE, explores the concept of long-cycle fire risk in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire and subsequent regulatory reform. Drawing on extensive experience across regulatory and operational settings, the piece examines how compliance-driven frameworks can fall short when it comes to the ongoing governance of fire safety in tall residential buildings.

The article encourages professionals to look beyond immediate compliance and consider how fire risk is managed over the full lifecycle of a building, highlighting the importance of sustained oversight, accountability, and strategic risk management.

A compelling read for those involved in fire engineering, safety, and the built environment.

Alan Winterburn delivered today's Elevate session and provided detailed insight on PV on roofs and RC62

The next webinar in the Elevate series will take place in two weeks' time and will examine structural protection. Xu Dai will be presenting this session and will discuss structural fire engineering calculations and how these can demonstrate that a structure may not need to meet the fire performance outlined in standard guidance documents.

For those who were unable to attend today's session, our Elevate series is available on the CPD Hub for IFE members to view. Explore the series ➡️ https://www.ife.org.uk/Home/MyIFE/MyIFE-hub/Learning-resources/CPD-Hub/On-Demand-Webinars/Details/articleid/192

🧠 Empowering members through recognised sector qualifications

In today’s exams series post we’re focusing on how these qualifications help professionals demonstrate knowledge and understanding.

Ofqual-regulated and nationally recognised, the IFE FRA qualifications are a way of evidencing expertise in fire risk assessment. Aligned to BS 8674 and developed by subject matter experts, these exams provide clients, employers, insurers, and duty holders greater confidence that an assessor meets clearly defined, up-to-date professional standards of knowledge and understanding.

Today we spotlight the work of our Presidential Team and their commitment to advancing fire safety globally.

James Lane, International President (25-26), and Mark Reilly, International President-Elect (25-26), work together to represent the IFE, foster collaboration, and support our growing international membership. Drawing on their experience and expertise, they champion best practice, engage key stakeholders, and promote the institution’s global initiatives.
Their leadership ensures the IFE continues to connect, inspire, and make an impact across the fire profession worldwide.

Through the IP teams’ attendance at events globally, they have provided professionals such as Russ Timpson FIFireE with a unique and experienced perspective for his event. This has helped provide greater credibility to the events when they are discussing important subject matter.

Thank you to our Presidential Team for your dedication and collaboration.

👏 Today we are shining a light on the dedicated volunteers who serve across our IFE panels

These individuals play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity, quality, and professionalism of the IFE. From supporting membership and professional registration, to contributing to the Fire Risk Register and Fire Risk Auditor reviews, their expertise underpins key decisions that shape the fire sector. They have cumulatively reviewed over 1,000 applications to ensure the highest standards are met in all areas of the IFE.

Their impact extends even further, supporting recognitions reviews, and contributing to both the Education and Ethics Panels.

Through their knowledge, diligence, and commitment, our panel volunteers help safeguard trust in the profession and strengthen the IFE’s global reputation.

Dr Clare Barker volunteers on the IFE Registrant’s Group (IFERG) committee and the Individual Route Panel (IRP). The work our panel volunteers undertake allows professionals such as Susan Deeny to move forward in their career, with Susan becoming a Chartered Engineer through the IFE enabling her to display his knowledge and commitment to a safer sector.

Thank you for the essential role you play and the difference you make.

🌍 Today’s Volunteers’ Week post focuses on the important work of our worldwide branch volunteers

Across our 34 branches, volunteers work to bring members together, creating opportunities to connect, learn, and share knowledge at a local level.

Over the past year, they have delivered 60+ events, from technical talks and networking sessions to community engagement activities, supporting professional development and strengthening our global network.

Their commitment ensures that the IFE remains accessible, relevant, and connected to the communities it serves.
One of our branch members, Kelly Geraghty, plays an active role in supporting professional development through their work organising CPD events for the IFE Canada branch. Through these events, Kelly has helped address knowledge gaps for professionals across the sector, supporting best practice and ongoing learning.

Kelly’s efforts have enabled attendees to strengthen their understanding, remain aligned with sector standards, and feel more confident in applying their knowledge in practice.

To all our worldwide branch volunteers, thank you for your time and continued support in creating a fire safe future.
