30th July 2024- Goodlands Gardens Taunton, old footbridge removal.
The footbridge was closed by Somerset Council on November 30, 2022, due to it becoming unsafe and in need of repairs. Repair costs were unfortunately unable to be met and so the decision was made to remove the bridge entirely.

This turned out to be one of the most complicated projects we've ever undertaken.
The original plan was to lift the bridge in its entirety in one operation, and deposit it on the far riverbank. However, once some of the covering wood was removed, there were unexpected steel bolts and plates (on both sides) holding the bridge in place that took some time to remove.
When we started trying to lift, the crane was pulling at nearly max capacity (10 tons) and the bridge was cracking and twisting in unexpected places.

Due to the major safety concerns and after consultation with Sian (structural engineer from Fairhurst), Kathryn (C2 Safety advisor) and the council project manager, it was decided to carry out a controlled demolition of the bridge, so that it would fall straight down under its own weight, minimising the risks to everyone.
The controlled demolition was a resounding success, with the bridge splitting neatly into 3 pieces that could then be safely lifted by the crane onto the bank. From there, the bridge was transported off-site for breaking down and the materials sent for recycling.

Karesa would like to thank all of our workers, SHR Construct and the South West Crane Hire team for all their hard work on what turned into the longest day to get this job completed.
A special thank you to Sam Boobyer, who did a fantastic job managing this project.
We would also like to thank C2 Safety and Fairhurst Engineering for all their assistance over the course of this project.

Delivered over a week early on a 10 week programme.
Well done Sam Boobyer Project Manager for this one, another quality build to programme and 100% safety record.
