A rare opportunity to take on a genuinely special Mk2 Golf GTI.

Converted to electric by eDub several years ago, this car combines the classic Mk2 platform with a Tesla Small Drive Unit, approximately 53kWh CALB battery pack, Orion BMS and a fully bespoke EV drivetrain.

There has been well over £70,000 invested in the car overall. The EV conversion alone was around £60,000, before taking into account the donor car and further upgrades including a big brake kit, OZ wheels, lowered suspension and a retrimmed interior.

The odometer is currently showing 1,039 miles since the EV conversion.

The car is currently non-running, but it has now been thoroughly inspected by VASS Technology and there is a clear, practical and cost-effective route to getting it back on the road.

Rather than an unknown project, this is now a car with a defined recommissioning plan and the majority of the expensive hardware already installed — making it a very interesting opportunity for someone who wants a genuinely unique Mk2 without starting a build from scratch.

Specification includes:

• Tesla Small Drive Unit
• Approx. 53kWh CALB battery pack
• Orion BMS
• AC charging
• CHAdeMO charging hardware
• DC/DC converter
• Electric power steering
• Electric brake assistance
• Custom EV instrumentation
• Big brake kit
• OZ wheels
• Lowered suspension
• Retrimmed interior

For serious buyers, we can discuss the inspection findings privately, explain the recommissioning plan and outline exactly what would be involved in getting the car back on the road.

What have we been up to lately?

It’s been a busy few weeks at VASS Technology, with plenty of engineering, travelling and some very interesting projects along the way.

We’ll start with something small, but something we’re quite proud of — our own Land Rover Defender hinges. Designed and manufactured by us as a cleaner, stronger replacement for the originals, the first set is now going onto a customer vehicle. It’s always satisfying seeing something go from an idea, through CAD and manufacture, and finally onto the car.

Next came a quick trip to Spain to work on a Fiat/SEAT 600. We had just one day with the car, so we made every hour count — scanning, measuring, photographing and collecting as much information as possible to help us develop an EV conversion kit specifically for these fantastic little cars.

We even removed the engine and drivetrain so we could properly understand the available space, mounting points and packaging constraints.

After flying back to the UK, it was almost straight on the road again — this time to Northern Ireland to diagnose a well-known electric VW Golf, identify the issues and work out what will be required to get it back to where it should be.

Then came MiniFest.

It was great to see a familiar face — the classic Mini we previously converted to electric — and to meet its new owner, who won the car through UKMINIS.

We also had a closer look at the Memoride EV Mini and spoke with a supplier of brand-new Mini bodyshells, which could be very useful for future VASS Mini builds.

It’s been busy, and there’s plenty more interesting work happening behind the scenes.

VASS Technology — modern engineering for the cars worth keeping.
