As we're in October flying activity begins to slow for the winter, each of our Spitfires comes into the workshop for its annual maintenance — a comprehensive inspection of the aircraft and its systems. Much like an MOT for a car, but considerably more in-depth, the process can take up to four weeks to complete.

MJ627 is currently undergoing her annual maintenance, and over the coming weeks, each of our two-seat Spitfires will take its turn in the workshop. By staggering these inspections, we can ensure that two-seat flights continue throughout the autumn and winter months with minimal interruption.

So, what does an annual maintenance check involve?

The inspection covers almost every aspect of the aircraft. The airframe is carefully examined for signs of corrosion, damage or structural defects, while the flight control cables are checked for fraying and wear. Engine cowlings are removed to allow a thorough inspection of the engine. The engine oil is drained, oil filters and spark plugs are inspected, and cylinder compression tests are carried out to assess the condition of the engine.

The undercarriage and hydraulic systems are also inspected and tested, with many other detailed checks carried out along the way. The list of inspections goes on, but this gives you an idea of just how thorough the process is.

It’s a meticulous process, but every inspection plays a vital role in ensuring that each Spitfire remains safe, reliable and airworthy, ready to take to the skies again.

While the flying season may be slowing down, there’s certainly no slowing down behind the workshop doors!

Spitfire Restoration Update -

Earlier this week, we reached a major milestone in our Spitfire restoration project — Spitfire Mk I X4276.

The week began with lifting the fuselage off the ground and placing jacks beneath the jacking pads on Frame 5. The tail was then raised onto a trestle, ensuring the fuselage was perfectly level before the wings were fitted.

With the fuselage level and the tail securely supported, we carried out a final inspection of the wing spars and the carry-through spar on the frame, checking that everything was as it should be. Lubrication was also applied to these areas to assist with slotting the wings into position.

With the team on hand to carefully guide the wing into place, we started with the starboard wing. Using an A-frame crane, we slowly hoisted the wing and manoeuvred it into position, carefully aligning the wing spars with the carry-through spar.

At this stage, precision is crucial. The holes in the wing spar and carry-through spar must line up perfectly to allow the wing spar bolts to be fitted. After some careful adjustment, the wing was successfully eased into position.

Temporary bolts were then fitted to hold the wing in place, allowing precise setting of wing dihedral. Once everything was correctly aligned, the single bolt securing the rear spar to the fuselage was fitted, followed by reaming and permanently fitting bolts through Frame 5.

The entire process was then repeated for the port wing. Each wing is secured by eight bolts — seven bolts through Frame 5 and one bolt into Frame 10.

This is a major milestone in the restoration of X4276. From this point onwards, over the coming months, we will see the Spitfire really begin to come together, bringing us one step closer, week by week, to its first flight.

What goes into keeping a Spitfire flying?

Alongside our sister company, FlyaSpitfire.com, we operate three two-seat Spitfires, giving passengers the unique opportunity to experience these iconic aircraft from the air.

Behind every flight is our dedicated engineering team, responsible for keeping each aircraft safe, serviceable and ready for its next experience flight. When a problem arises, it’s all hands-on deck to diagnose the fault, carry out the necessary repairs and return the aircraft to service.

- SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
Our engineers carry out regular 25-hour inspections, with the depth of the inspection increasing at the 50, 75 and 100-hour intervals.

- Checks can include:
• Airframe inspections
• Engine oil and filter inspection/replacement
• Fluid leak checks, including hoses and connections
• Spark plug inspections
• Checks for wear, deterioration and developing faults
The 100-hour inspection is more comprehensive than a standard 25-hour check, allowing our engineers to examine the aircraft in greater depth.

These inspections are not only about confirming the aircraft is safe to fly — they also help identify developing problems before they become larger issues.

- ENGINE RUNS
Once maintenance is complete, the Spitfire undergoes a series of high-power engine runs to confirm the engine and associated systems are operating normally.

Once everything is satisfactory, the cowlings are refitted, and the aircraft can be prepared for its next flight experience.

If a fault has been identified and rectified, a test flight may be required before returning to passenger operations. Following a fault-free 25-hour inspection, a satisfactory high-power engine run is generally all that is required before the aircraft returns to service.

With three two-seat Spitfires, the aircraft are continually rotated through our facility for scheduled maintenance, ensuring each receives the engineering attention it needs to keep flying.

It’s been a busy week here at The Spitfire Company! Alongside the usual maintenance on the flyaspitfire.com two-seat Spitfires, we’ve also been preparing our Spitfire, Mustang, Buchón and Hurricane for the Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show, which starts tomorrow.

One of our engineers has been hard at work cleaning and polishing Moonbeam McSwine to a mirror finish — and she is absolutely gleaming! She’s looking her very best and is ready to take to the skies for the airshow.

Of course, we know that after a few sorties she’ll be dirty again, and we’ll be back to repeat the process… but when you see that finish, it’s definitely worth the effort! ✨

Work continues on our latest Spitfire restoration, and another major milestone is now within sight.

The wings are now out the paint shop with the markings applied, and our engineers are now preparing to fit them to the aircraft in the coming weeks. With the wings currently in the upright position, the team can also carry out final test fitting of components such as the undercarriage and radiators.

Meanwhile, the tailplane is in the final stages of restoration, while work continues inside the fuselage with the installation of its systems and remaining components.

There’s plenty more to come on this Spitfire, but our next update will be a particularly exciting one — the wings being fitted to the fuselage. From there, the aircraft will move ever closer to final assembly, engine runs and, ultimately, its return to the skies for test flight.

Another big step forward in returning this Spitfire to the skies.

Our Hawker Hurricane AE977 completed her post-maintenance flight yesterday evening, following a scheduled period of maintenance.

As part of the work, her propeller was removed and sent away for its scheduled inspection — a check required every few years looking for any signs of corrosion Internally.

With the inspection complete, the propeller was refitted and high-power engine runs were carried out to ensure everything was performing as it should. We’re delighted to report that AE977 then successfully completed her maintenance flight yesterday evening. She’s all good to go! ✅

And that means she’s ready to head to Duxford for the Battle of Britain Air Show on 12th & 13th September.

Our engineering team is making excellent progress on our latest Spitfire restoration project. We are approaching the significant milestone of wing installation, after which work will begin on the detailed fitting out of both the wings and fuselage.

Last month, we said farewell to our latest restoration, Spitfire Mk I P9372, as she departed for her new home.

After years of meticulous restoration, dedication and craftsmanship, our engineering team gathered to witness the culmination of their hard work as P9372 took to the skies once again.

Her departure from Biggin Hill carried special significance, as it was the very same airfield from which she flew in 1940. A proud moment for everyone involved.
