Mapping the UK’s Civil Nuclear Future

We are pleased to spotlight the work of Houda Aoussar, our Junior Consultant.

As part of building her knowledge of our client base and the broader UK civil nuclear strategy, Houda has been mapping the UK’s nuclear ecosystem. Her recent Insights piece highlights six key facilities that together power innovation, energy, and safety across the lifecycle, from operational reactors to decommissioning and waste management.

This horizon view provides context on how the UK’s nuclear estate underpins energy security, drives research and innovation, and delivers safe decommissioning.

Deep Decarbonisation in Industrial Manufacturing

We are pleased to share our latest Insight from Nishantraj Pandey, Head of Consulting at Co-Lab.

This work explores the pathways to deep decarbonisation across industrial manufacturing, mapping out innovations through three horizons:

Business Horizon – scaling technologies, such as bio-based plastics, CO₂-cured concrete, and electric arc furnaces.

Engineering Horizon – pilot and demonstration projects, including hydrogen steelmaking and electrified petrochemicals.

Scientific Horizon – early-stage breakthroughs like artificial photosynthesis, high-temperature carbon capture, and graphene concrete.

The horizon scan highlights both the near-term steps industry can take now and the radical innovations that could shape the 2030s and beyond.

We proudly announce that Co-Lab is now a Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) member.

The NIA is the trade association for the civil nuclear sector in the UK, representing more than 270 companies across the supply chain. Its role is to promote nuclear as a key part of the UK’s energy mix, support skills and innovation, and provide a collective voice for the industry.

Joining the NIA reflects our commitment to supporting the future of nuclear through practical engineering, management, and sustainability projects. It also allows us to connect with other organisations that are driving progress in this vital sector.

We look forward to working with the NIA and its members.

Co-Lab Achieves ISO 14001 Accreditation

We are pleased to share that Co-Lab has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation for our environmental management system.

This standard provides a structured way to manage and reduce our environmental impact. For us, it is a commitment to embedding sustainability into our work every day.

ISO 14001 helps us make responsible, consistent, and measurable decisions from the projects we deliver to how we run our business.

Thank you to our team and partners who supported this process.

What’s on the radar for UK Data Centre Policy?

We are pleased to introduce Asmita Mehta, our Associate Research Advisor. Having recently graduated from the Royal College of Art in London with a Master’s in Design Futures, Asmita is working with us to research and develop insights into the technology and policy trends that will shape our future.

Her latest horizon scan looks at the UK’s data centre sector. Data centres are critical to the digital economy, but rapid growth raises questions about energy demand, carbon emissions, and the role of new technologies.

The research maps near-term, medium-term, and long-term policies influencing sustainable and resilient data centre infrastructure. It also highlights how West Cumbria, with available land and clean energy capacity, could position itself as a strategic hub for AI and next-generation compute.
