A Century On: Why Phenolic Polymers Continue to Evolve

We’re pleased to see Bitrez Ltd featured in the Autumn 2026 edition of Chemicals Northwest’s Elements magazine, with an article exploring the remarkable evolution of phenolic polymer technology.

More than a century after their introduction, phenolic polymers remain an important part of modern manufacturing – supporting applications across protective coatings, composites, friction materials, insulation and industrial adhesives.

But while the fundamental chemistry has stood the test of time, the demands placed upon it continue to change. Today’s material development must balance performance with increasingly important considerations around regulatory compliance, toxicological profiles, sustainability and evolving customer expectations.

The article looks at how these challenges continue to drive innovation in established chemistries – refining molecular structure and formulation to retain the performance characteristics customers value while responding to the requirements of modern industry.

As the article concludes, after more than 100 years of development, there is still a surprising amount of innovation left to come in phenolic technology.

Paul Jones attends Town hall to offer his insights into The King's Awards for Enterprise.

Dr. Vikas Shah MBE DL, led the fireside discussion and introduced Paul Jones, widely considered one of the most innovative chemists in the UK. As Head of Research and Development, Paul has pioneered the development of products that are free from carcinogens while addressing anthropogenic environmental damage. With numerous patents in this field and extensive industry recognition, he has single-handedly made a significant impact on the specialty polymers sector. His pioneering work in developing environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional epoxy curatives and phenolic polymers has been particularly influential. As the recipient of four separate KAE awards, Paul was exceptionally well placed to offer insight into the merits of this most prestigious accolade.
