At WJM Design & Build, we're kicking off a full transformation of a rear conservatory-style space in Bramhall.

Good progress by week 4 at our Bramhall project, the structural work behind this transformation is now nearly complete, marking a key milestone as the space really begins to take shape.

This project involves the complete reworking of an existing rear conservatory-style space, replacing the inefficient glazed timber roof with a new insulated standing seam steel roof using GreenCoat PLX, alongside four new roof windows to bring natural light deep into the space.

So far on site:

✅ Kitchen rip out and floor removal completed
✅ Rear knock through completed with steels installed
✅ Existing beam bolted into the new steelwork
✅ 5 new window and door apertures formed with raised openings
✅ Hallway floor upgraded with Kingspan insulation between joists and CaberDek overlay
✅ Brickwork and padstones installed for the new ridge beam, which is now in place and timber packed
✅ Brickwork completed up to wallplate height
✅ New DPC installed below the picture window
✅ New roof structure has started to be constructed
✅ First fix electrics underway
✅ First fix plumbing underway

Externally, the new openings will create a much stronger connection to the garden, including a picture window, three 2 panel sliding doors, one 3 panel sliding door and four aluminium windows.

Internally, the kitchen will open into the new space to form a larger and far more usable living area, alongside upgrades including underfloor heating and new external decking.

With every stage carefully considered, this is already becoming a major transformation, with the structure now nearly complete and the space really starting to take shape.

We’re making great progress on this project, with the mitred hips now coming together alongside the main slate work. These details take real time, patience and precision, because every slate, cut and angle has to line through perfectly for the finished roof to look and perform as it should.

Our client came to us wanting to transform their kitchen and garage area into a more open, functional space that works for modern family life. A space where the family could come together and just 'work' for them.

After talking together to discuss plans, we carried out structural alterations and layout improvements, including:

✅ Altering existing openings to accommodate new windows, doors, and bi-folds
✅ Partially replacing the existing glazed roof with a solid structure and a new glazed apex
✅ Creating a new pantry by reconfiguring part of the garage
✅ Relocating the boiler and modifying internal walls
✅ Installing brick slips on an existing wall for a refined finish

The project also included a newly fitted kitchen and updated flooring, completing the transformation of the space.

Needless to say this space now benefits from a brighter, more functional layout, where every detail has been considered to enhance the way the space works and feels.

The Brief
Our clients wanted to transform their kitchen and garage area into a more open, functional space that works for modern family life.

What We Did

Big progress this week at our Alderley Edge project as we move onto the roof stage 🔨

This is always an exciting phase where the roofline takes shape and the home’s character really starts to reveal itself.

The design combines a slate-clad pitched roof with a central flat roof section, allowing us to create a new second floor while maintaining the overall look and feel of the property.

The dormers will be finished in lead, adding depth, texture, and a durable, high-quality finish that will stand the test of time. We’ll also be mitring the slate at the hips – a traditional detail that gives a sharper, more refined finish and reflects the level of craftsmanship going into the build.

A key stage where precision really matters, not just for how it looks, but for how it performs for years to come.

Now the steels are in place, the roof structure is really starting to take shape.

The roof construction is now in place at our Alderley Edge project, setting the framework for everything that follows and ensuring the build performs exactly as it should for years to come.

A warm roof construction has been formed to the central section, improving thermal performance and creating a more efficient, comfortable space at second floor level.

Around the perimeter, pitched rafters shape the roofline and establish the overall form of the home, bringing the architectural intent into reality.

We’ve also formed four dormers with steel frames, giving us greater strength and control in the detailing once completed.

It’s a stage that won’t be seen once the project is finished, but it’s one of the most important – where precision, coordination and craftsmanship quietly do their job.
