Gas Leak and Fire at SK Hynix Semiconductor Plant Exposes Workers in South Korea
A fire and subsequent fluorine gas leak at an SK Hynix semiconductor manufacturing facility in Cheongju, South Korea, resulted in multiple workers requiring medical evaluation on June 1st, highlighting the significant process safety challenges associated with advanced semiconductor production.
According to reports, the incident began when a fire broke out inside the semiconductor plant, leading to the release of fluorine gas. Emergency responders quickly contained the fire, preventing further escalation and allowing plant operations to continue while authorities investigated the cause.
Initial reports indicated that seven workers were sent to an on-site medical clinic for assessment following exposure to the gas. While no fatalities were reported, the incident prompted an emergency response and notification of relevant authorities.
SK Hynix, one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers, confirmed that the fire was rapidly brought under control and stated that an investigation is underway in cooperation with regulators and emergency services.
Gas leaks in semiconductor plants present unique hazards because cleanroom environments often contain interconnected networks of chemical delivery systems, pressurised gas cylinders, and highly specialised processing equipment.
Key safety measures for semiconductor manufacturing facilities include:
๐น Continuous toxic gas detection and alarm systems
๐น Automated gas isolation and emergency shutdown systems
๐น Secondary containment and leak mitigation infrastructure
๐น Ventilation and exhaust systems designed for hazardous gases
๐น Routine inspection and maintenance of gas delivery networks
๐น Real-time environmental and atmospheric monitoring
๐น Emergency response procedures for chemical releases and fires
๐น Specialised worker training for hazardous materials handling
