There’s something about working with iron.

In the forge, a solid piece of iron can be heated, shaped and worked by hand into something completely different.

It’s a process that relies as much on experience as it does strength. Knowing when the iron is ready to work, how it will move under the hammer and when it needs to go back into the heat all comes from time spent at the forge.

And while the tools and equipment available to a modern blacksmith have evolved, many of the principles behind the craft have remained unchanged for generations.

That’s a big part of what we do at Stackwell Forge.

Traditional craftsmanship on a remarkable scale.

This project in Amersham saw the Stackwell Forge team commissioned to create a substantial collection of bespoke ironwork as part of the restoration of a magnificent Georgian estate.

Working closely with the client’s architect, we produced everything from large automated estate entrance gates and pedestrian gates to walled garden railings, rooftop railings and rare Spirex balustrading, all designed to complement the original architecture of the property.

One of the biggest challenges was the material itself. The specification called for genuine puddled wrought iron rather than modern mild steel, despite it not having been commercially produced for around 50 years.

Over 18 months, our team sourced the materials and traditionally forged each element, creating modern-day reproductions sympathetic to the character and craftsmanship of the original Georgian estate.

The finished designs were approved by both the client and the local conservation authority.

A project that perfectly demonstrates what Stackwell Forge does best: traditional forge work, specialist knowledge and bespoke ironwork created for buildings where the details really matter.

Gates designed to belong.

From Georgian estate gates and traditional driveway gates to smaller entrance gates, these examples from the Stackwell Forge archives show just some of Paul’s work across a range of properties and settings.

Each design has been approached with its surroundings in mind, creating gates that sit harmoniously with the character and proportions of the property rather than simply being added as an afterthought.

Whether it’s a substantial set of estate gates or a smaller pedestrian entrance, traditional ironwork can make a real difference to the entrance of a property.

There’s something quite remarkable about looking back at work that was completed more than two decades ago and appreciating just how much went into creating it.

These reproduction Victorian estate entrance gates were completed by Stackwell Forge in Suffolk in 2002.

More than 6,000 individually hand-forged pieces went into the entrance gates and piers, with the project taking well over 4,000 man hours to complete.

The scale of the project is impressive in itself, but it’s when you look closer at the gates that you begin to appreciate the level of detail involved. From the decorative ironwork across the top to the repeated forged elements throughout the design, this was a substantial piece of traditional ironwork.

More than 20 years later, it remains a project we are incredibly proud to have produced and a reminder of the craftsmanship, time and sheer amount of work that can sit behind a finished set of gates.

At the turn of the millennium, Stackwell Forge was commissioned by an architectural practice in Connecticut, USA, to create these magnificent Victorian estate gates. Measuring an incredible 17 feet wide and almost 20 feet high, they were so large that a bespoke shipping container had to be built just to transport them across the Atlantic.

While the main frame was formed from solid iron, almost every decorative detail was individually hand forged. The sweeping leaves, berries and rosettes weren’t cast or pressed. Each one was shaped by hand, with the largest leaf starting life as a 4ft square steel plate before being transformed at the anvil.

In total, more than two tonnes of iron went into the finished commission, creating a set of gates that combined traditional blacksmithing skills with true Victorian craftsmanship.

More than 25 years later, they remain one of the most ambitious projects ever to leave the forge.
