These cap plates will sit on top of the steel posts, with another beam sitting above them.

The important bit? Those holes need to line up with the connection above, which is why measuring, drilling and checking everything properly matters.

What is a Universal Column (UC) in structural steel? 👀

Despite the name, a Universal Column doesn’t always have to be used as a column.

Universal Columns (UCs) are structural steel sections with a depth and width that are relatively similar, giving them their distinctive, more square-shaped profile.

They can be used vertically as steel columns, but depending on the structural engineer’s design, they can also be used horizontally as supporting beams for floors and other structural loads.

So if you see “UC” on your structural drawings, don’t automatically assume it’s standing upright.

The section, size and application should always follow your structural engineer’s specification.

What is a steel bearing plate, and why is it used? 👀

A steel bearing plate sits between a structural steel beam and the supporting wall below. Its job is to spread the load from the beam across a wider area of brickwork, helping create a stronger, more stable connection.

Bearing plates can sometimes replace padstones, or they may be used alongside them, depending on the structural engineer’s design.

A typical bearing plate may be around 100mm wide to match the width of the brickwork and 300–400mm long to help distribute the load evenly. The exact size should always be taken from the structural engineer’s drawings.

At Buy A Beam, you can order steel bearing plates online in a range of lengths and widths to suit your project.

Why do we always test the holes before fabrication? 👀

Because every connection has to line up exactly with the structural engineer's drawings.

This fin plate will be welded onto one beam and bolted to another, so checking the fit before welding helps avoid delays and rework on site.
