“My house is in bits… how quickly can I get my steel?!” 😅

It's one of the most common questions we get. When you're halfway through a building project, the last thing you want is to be waiting around for structural steel.

So, how long does structural steel take to arrive?

Straight steel beams (cut to size):
Typically 2–3 days for delivery, with collection sometimes available the same day or within 24 hours, depending on stock.

Bespoke fabricated structural steel:
Typically 1–1.5 weeks, depending on the complexity of the job.

Why the difference?

Fabricated steel can require additional drawings, approvals, drilling, welding and bespoke connections, all of which need to be right before the steel arrives on site.

Rushing a steel beam through fabrication only to discover it doesn't fit can cost a builder far more time than getting it right in the first place.

What’s the difference between a steel bearing plate and a padstone?

Both can be used as part of supporting a structural steel beam and distributing the load into the masonry below, but they’re not the same thing.

A steel bearing plate is a flat steel plate that sits between the beam and the supporting masonry. It helps spread the concentrated load from the beam over a larger area.

A padstone is typically a precast concrete unit built into the brickwork or blockwork, with the steel beam bearing onto it.

So while they can perform a similar function, how they’re installed and what they’re made from is different.

Which one do you need?

👉 Check your structural engineer’s calculations and drawings. They should specify the required bearing arrangement, dimensions and material for your particular project.

What’s the difference between S275 and S355 structural steel? 👀

S275 and S355 are two common structural steel grades you’ll come across on UK construction projects and although they can look exactly the same, they don’t have the same strength.

The number relates to the steel’s minimum yield strength: S275 has a nominal minimum yield strength of 275 MPa, while S355 is 355 MPa for relevant thickness ranges.

In the workshop, you generally can’t tell the difference just by looking at them, which is why the grade specified on the structural drawings matters.

In this video, Tom explains where we commonly encounter S275 and S355, including structural sections and flat bar, and why you shouldn't simply assume which grade you need.

The important bit?

Always order the steel grade specified by your structural engineer. Different sections, thicknesses and applications can have different requirements.
