Engineers from across the UK came to maxon UK & Ireland’s Drive Technology Insight 2026.

Held at The British Motor Museum, visiting engineers from a variety of industry sectors attended, all with one thing in common: the reliance on precision drive systems.

With drive technology tech talks from engineering experts including Ronak Samani, Amadeu Placido, Tamas Hertelendi, and Martin Leahy, the event also gave the opportunity for engineers to talk face-to-face about real-world drive system challenges, and handle drive system technology in person.

Visiting engineers were welcomed by maxon UK & Ireland Managing Director William Mason, and we were very happy to receive the support of maxon Group CEO Eugen Elmiger.

Attending the Farnborough International Airshow? Join us and discover drone propulsion systems alongside electric drives for aerospace.

: At FIA 2026, we’ll present our latest drone propulsion systems, primarily for lightweight drones.

Based on a flat, brushless DC (BLDC) electric motor, electronic speed controller, and matched propeller, the system optimises thrust while achieving a lightweight, compact footprint.

maxon’s engineers will explain how engineering support including customisation is helping drone developers optimise performance characteristics specific to operational requirements.

: maxon develops drive systems for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. At FIA, visitors will be able to talk directly to maxon’s engineers about applications ranging from air conditioning to pilot controls, tested to the DO-160 standard and certified in accordance with EN 9100.

: maxon’s flagship projects for space include partnership with NASA for every Mars mission to date. At FIA, maxon’s engineers will explain the drive system testing required for the demands of space, including vacuum, high radiation, and extremes of shock and high temperature.

Engineers from across the UK came together for maxon UK & Ireland’s Drive Technology Insight 2026 - a day dedicated to the drive systems advancing innovation.

Held at the British Motor Museum, the event brought together engineers from across industries, all united by one requirement: improving performance with precision drive systems.

From expert-led tech talks with Martin Leahy, Ronak Samani, Amadeu Placido, and Tamas Hertelendi, to hands-on interaction with hardware, the focus was on solving real-world motion challenges.

More importantly, the event created space for something you don’t get over video calls - direct, face-to-face engineering conversations.

Calling surgical robot manufacturers: talk to us at the Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics, 23 – 26 June 2026.

At the event, you can ask maxon UK's lead engineer for the medical sector, Matthew Dean, presenting in this post's video, about integration-ready robot joints.

Aerospace manufacturers can’t compromise on safety and reliability, and this includes the drive systems used across an aircraft.

What’s the maximum cable length you can use with a brushless DC motor?

You might be surprised to learn that even cables up to 100 metres long can be used - though this requires a perfect installation for trouble-free performance.

While standard cables used by BLDC motors and sensors often have lengths of 30cm up to 3m, longer cables can be used if required, trouble-free, providing the correct installation procedures are followed.

Contrary to wide belief, the signal’s voltage drop on long cables is not usually the root cause of a problematic installation. However, attention should be paid to encoder/sensor supply voltage, encoder signal type, bus interfaces, and EMI influence.

Surgical robot manufacturers are increasingly looking for integration-ready robot joints, but it’s vital that these systems can deliver precise motion and reliable performance.

The dexterity of surgical robots relies on their joints, comprising a motor, gear, position sensors, brakes, and controls.
