Energy bills are set to be a bit lower for many households from 1 April to 30 June 2026, with the UK energy price cap dropping to £1,641 a year for a typical home on a standard tariff.

This means the unit price you pay for gas and electricity has been capped at a lower level, which can help reduce your overall costs, but how much you save will depend on how much energy you use.

If you’re struggling with bills:

- Check if you can switch to a better tariff.
- Make small changes like lowering thermostat settings, draught-proofing windows and using energy-efficient appliances.
- Speak to your housing provider or local energy advice services for tailored support.

Moved in recently? Let’s talk about your energy meter.

- Meters can feel confusing at first.
- Buttons that don’t seem to do anything.
- Numbers that change.
- Screens that flash different codes.

It’s completely normal to look at it and think… “What am I actually meant to be checking?”

You’re not expected to understand it instantly.

Your meter is there to show:

- How much energy you’re using
- How much credit is left (if it’s prepayment)

Or the readings your energy supplier requires to bill you

That’s it. No hidden test. No trick settings.

If you’re unsure:

- Press the display button to scroll through screens
- Look for 'kWh' that’s your usage reading
- Check your balance if you’re on pay-as-you-go
- Take a photo of the reading when you move in

And if something doesn’t make sense? Ask your housing provider.

That’s part of settling into a new home.

If you’ve just moved in and the heating or lights work straight away, that can feel like a relief.

But it’s still important to understand who supplies your energy and what you’re being charged for.

If you don’t already have one, it’s also worth asking your supplier whether a smart meter can be fitted. Smart meters make it easier to see how much energy you’re using, spot changes early and avoid unexpected bills.

Asking early questions helps avoid worry later on.

Getting clarity now can save stress down the line.
