You see some unusual things when building houses…

Not every project is just kitchens, bathrooms and extensions.

Sometimes clients come to us with ideas that are a little more unusual.

Like this bespoke timber “throne” style loo, built into the joinery.

Or a home sauna, designed to create a proper retreat space.

Part of what makes these projects interesting is the variety. Every house is different and every client has their own ideas about how they want to live.

Our job is simply to work out how to build them properly.

Did you know you can rebuild a house to look exactly the same — but make it far more energy efficient?

Work is well underway at Fairfield Barnes, where we’re replacing an old farm building that had reached the end of its life.

The new house will be built to the same size and shape, keeping the look of a traditional farm building.

But behind the scenes the structure will be very different.

We’re building the main shell of the house using SIP panels. These arrive pre-made and slot together on site, which means the structure goes up quickly and very accurately.

They also create a very well insulated building, which will make the finished home far more energy efficient than the original building.

So from the outside it will still look like a traditional farm building.

Inside, it will perform very differently.

We’ll share more progress as the build develops.

What actually happens when you start a building project?

For most homeowners, a building project is something they only do once.

It’s exciting.

But it can also be disruptive, expensive and stressful if it isn’t well run.

One of the things our clients value most is knowing who they are dealing with.

The person they meet at the start of the project stays involved throughout the build.

That means:
• Decisions are made quickly
• Problems are solved properly
• Clients always know where they stand

This short video explains how we approach working with clients and why that continuity matters.

If you’re planning a complex extension or renovation and want to understand the process properly, we’re always happy to talk through early ideas.

Old roof meets new roof… ever wondered how they’re made to sit together neatly on an extension?

This is one of those satisfying stages during a build.

The tiles are laid out on the roof ready to go on, lining up the new section with the existing roof so the two work together visually.

At this point you can really start to see how the extension roof will sit alongside the original house.

The next photos show the tiles going on and then the finished result where you can see both roofs side by side.

Not glamorous. Just steady progress as the new part of the house starts to come together.

What do good building projects rely on? Good collaboration.

This kitchen was designed and supplied by Evie Willow, and installed as part of one of our recent projects.

Our role was to prepare the space properly, coordinate the installation and make sure everything worked together — from the structure and services through to the final finishes.

Before a kitchen like this goes in, quite a bit needs to be right behind the scenes. Floor levels, services, lighting positions and structural details all need to line up so the installation runs smoothly.

When everyone involved communicates well and understands the intent of the design, the process tends to be far more straightforward.

Evie Willow were great to work with on this project.

We’ll be sharing more of the specialist designers and suppliers we collaborate with over the coming weeks.

What happens when a project can’t be done all at once?

Brooder’s Farm is a multi-phase extension and renovation which we've just started.

The family are relocating from Somerset, so the first phase focused on reconfiguring the existing house — dividing rooms and adding en suites so they can move in comfortably.

Only then do we move to the larger structural works.

Phase two is a two-storey rear extension for a master suite, lounge and utility.

Phase three adds a single-storey extension for a larger dining space, additional WC and mudroom.

Later phases include a swimming pool, pool house, outbuildings and a new carport and driveway entrance.

When projects are phased properly, each stage supports the next.

It allows clients to move at the right time.

It spreads disruption.

It keeps decisions manageable.

You don’t have to do everything at once — but you do need to plan it properly from the start.

What makes JPT Builders different?

For us, it’s straightforward.

If we say we’ll do something, we do it.
If something changes, we explain it.
If there’s a problem, we deal with it.

When your name is on the company, standards aren’t optional. They’re personal.

Most of our clients are making a significant investment in their home. Many run businesses themselves. They understand what reputation means and what it takes to protect it.

So do we.

Construction can be demanding. It brings decisions, pressure and the unexpected.

But it can also be steady, organised and even enjoyable when it’s handled properly.

That’s how we approach every project.

If you’re planning a renovation or extension and want to understand how we work, do get in touch.

What are we working on?
High Street, Old Town, Swindon.

This used to be the old ironmongers – trading here since the 1800s. We’re now converting it into a new homely space for a local estate agency.

It’s our one commercial job at the moment. Most of our work is residential, but good buildings are good buildings. If it needs doing properly, we’re interested.

There’s a bit of history here for JP as well.

He bought his first spade from this shop when he was a boy, back when it was still trading as Limmex. He certainly wouldn't have imagined then, being back years later working on the building itself.

The team have started the strip out and structural changes. It’s early days, but progress will be shared as it takes shape.

If you’re planning a commercial refurbishment and want it handled with the same care and structure as a high-value residential build, we’re always happy to have a conversation, just drop us a DM.

One of the biggest concerns clients have? Knowing who is actually responsible once the build starts.

Here’s what one client said after a seven-month kitchen extension:

“We are delighted with the way JPT delivered our seven-month kitchen extension.

We lived in the house throughout.

That was the real test.

From the first groundworks through to final snagging, the team were skilled, respectful and easy to deal with. The project schedule was clear, changes were explained in advance and there were very few surprises.

JP was on site most weeks and at the fortnightly meetings. If we had a question, we could ask him directly.

When an early access issue arose, it was dealt with immediately and the job kept moving.”

Projects of this scale need clear accountability.

The person you meet at the beginning should still be involved at the end.

It's the final 5% is what people live with for the next 20 years.

Not the steel.
Not the plasterboard.

The alignment of doors.
The way the worktop meets the wall.
The feel of drawers closing properly.

This kitchen sits properly because everything behind it was set out properly.

Levels checked.
Openings measured twice.
Services positioned where they should be.

When that groundwork is right, the finish follows.

Nothing forced into place.

Nothing adjusted to make it “good enough”.

Just a kitchen installed as it was designed to be.

That’s what lasts.

When a design looks unusual on paper… what happens next?

It slopes, changes direction and forms a triangular geometry — not something you lift from a standard detail.

It slopes, changes direction and forms a triangular geometry — not something you lift from a standard detail.

That’s where experience matters.

Because drawings show intent — but someone still has to make it work properly on site.

That means:
– Setting out carefully
– Checking levels repeatedly
– Thinking through how everything connects

We could have simplified it.

But the house deserves better than that.

So we worked with the architects and the owners to build just what they wanted.

🌟Client Feedback is always extremely helpful for us at JPT and below is our most recent review of a project completed earlier this year. 🤩

We are delighted with the way JPT delivered our 7 month kitchen extension. They were all nice people to work with and good at their jobs which made the whole process relatively painless even though we lived in the house throughout.

Quality of people and work
Almost without exception, from JP onward the quality of site and head office workers and the work they delivered was first rate. Paul and Jim’s groundwork during difficult winter conditions deserves special mention but the quality of all contractors was of a high standard.

Project Management
JP with support from Jason and Nathan managed the project efficiently and transparently. The end to end project schedule was an essential reference point throughout. There were very few unwelcome surprises as we were made to understand in advance if any delay or change was likely. Jason’s on-site management of contractors was excellent.

Communication
What stood out for us was JP’s presence on site most weeks and at fortnightly project meetings, even when he was recovering from knee surgery. We felt we knew the state of play and if we didn’t we could ask him directly.

Problem solving and creativity
When problems and challenges arose, JP and his team provided creative and practical solutions. For example initial site access issues (due to a change of heart by the council) were dealt with immediately by acquiring new equipment on day one.

Head office
Laura’s administrative support worked very smoothly with our questions and requests generally dealt with same day.

Snagging
Once the main body of work was completed, any snags arising were dealt with quickly and efficiently.
