The Unlocking the Severn project (completed in 2022) has built 4 fish passes on the River Severn and modified 2 weirs on the River Teme to improve river connectivity for fish. The project has unlocked 158 miles of river habitat for rare and endangered migratory fish, including the endangered twaite shad. Diglis Fish Pass was the largest of these structures when built: 100m long, 8m wide, 5m deep. More than 27 species of fish have been recorded using Diglis Fish Pass since its completion in 2021. Diglis Island is a manmade lock island in the River Severn near Worcester city centre. As part of Unlocking the Severn, the island and its Victorian workshop were renovated and turned into a beautiful space to host visitors and school groups on special open days. 🐟The shad count for 2026 is in.........
.....632 shad were counted swimming past the window - the second highest number that we've seen. 🎉👏🎉👏🎉

The new AI camera that the Environment Agency are using is giving us much clearer images of the fish in the window.

Fish Pass drop-ins will start again in September, when the river temperature drops. We will publish the Autumn dates on our Events page at the end of August.

Our inland waterways are popular places, especially as the weather warms up, so it’s important to feel confident and know what to do if you find someone in difficulty in the water.

If you see someone in trouble, remember Phone Float Throw:

- Phone 999 to get help 📞
- Tell them to stay calm and float on their back 🗣️
- Throw something that floats to help until emergency services arrive 🫧
