We spent maybe 10 days working out what we were going to do and what was the optimum configuration and they were very attentive with the various details, not least the sitting of the battery and the cables that would be involved. The installation took three days and proceeded as planned and there were no technical issues. Throughout, both David and Russ and the team worked away assiduously and did everything that they said they would. They also were very good at talking me through the technical data, what it all means and how to adjust to optimise it. Engineering for warmer winters at Yew Tree Cottage, Partridge Green

This rural project called on the full range of our team's skills – from energy planning to ground-mount engineering.

Yew Tree Cottage, a rural property in Partridge Green with no mains gas connection, approached us to design and install a solar and battery system. The challenge? Generating enough power to cover heating, hot water and every appliance in the home, not just through a sunny June, but through the darkest months of winter too.

We designed a 17-kilowatt (kW) ground-mounted system: 28 Aiko solar panels on a Solarport mount, secured with RADIX ground screws rather than fixed to the roof, paired with a 12kW Sigenergy inverter and three 10kW Sigenergy batteries for 30kW of storage. Rather than sizing for an average day, we deliberately built in more capacity than the cottage needs at the height of summer, accepting that some generation gets "clipped" once the batteries are full, in exchange for reliable power through winter when it matters most.

The system now covers the cottage's heating, hot water and everyday electricity use across every season, giving the homeowners energy security without leaning on expensive grid electricity when the days are shortest.

FACT: A properly designed system protects your roof, it doesn't damage it.

Before any panels go up, we carry out three checks most installers skip:
✔️ Full structural checks to confirm your roof can safely take the extra load
✔️ Mounting hooks staggered across different rafters, so no single timber carries too much weight
✔️ Hook stop mats fitted underneath the tiles, to protect them for years to come

The result is a system engineered to work with your roof, not against it, and you'll get a copy of the structural design in your handover pack so you can see exactly what was checked and why.

Getting your panels fitted is only half the story. What happens afterwards is just as important.

Every system we install comes with its own monitoring app, so you can see exactly how much energy you're generating, using and exporting, right from your phone. ☀️ Are solar panels actually worth it?

It's a question we get asked more than any other, whether it's about a home or a business, and it's a fair one to ask before making that kind of investment.

For homes: a typical 4-kilowatt (kW) solar-only system costs around £5,000–£8,500 to install and can save up to £1,000 a year on energy bills. Add a battery and that return climbs further. Most homeowners reach full payback within 8 to 12 years, and across a 30-year system lifespan, that can add up to more than £50,000 in savings.

For businesses: the numbers work differently, but the answer's usually the same. Most commercial sites we work with pay back their system within 5 to 8 years, then spend the rest of that system's 30-year lifespan benefiting from low-cost electricity.

In both cases, the return depends on your roof's orientation, how much shading you get, and when you use most of your electricity.

What does your solar warranty actually cover?

Warranties are one of the most overlooked parts of a solar purchase decision, right up until something goes wrong.

At Sopoco, every installation comes with two separate types of cover:
✔️ A 2-year workmanship warranty from us, covering the quality of the installation itself
✔️ Full manufacturer warranties on the equipment itself, typically covering panels for 25 to 30 years, with separate terms for inverters and batteries depending on the brand

Because we're accredited under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and backed by the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC), you also have a clear route to resolution if a dispute ever arises, on top of the manufacturer and workmanship cover.

Before you sign with any installer, ask exactly what's covered, for how long, and who to contact if a claim's ever needed. It's a five-minute question that protects a decades-long investment.
