Consumer Unit Upgrade – Why It’s Worth Doing
Upgrading your existing consumer unit provides significant safety, reliability, and compliance benefits for your electrical installation. Modern consumer units are designed to offer far greater protection than older boards, reducing the risk of electric shock, fire, and nuisance tripping.

Key reasons to upgrade:

Improved Safety Features
Modern units include RCBOs, RCD protection, and AFDDs (where required), offering enhanced protection against earth faults, overloads, arc faults, and insulation breakdown. This greatly reduces the risk of electrical fires and personal injury.

Compliance with Current Regulations
Older boards often lack the protective devices required under the latest edition of the BS 7671 Wiring Regulations. Upgrading ensures your installation meets current standards, which is especially important for rented properties, commercial premises, and insurance requirements.

Better Fault Isolation
RCBO‑based boards isolate faults to individual circuits, meaning fewer disruptions and easier fault‑finding. This prevents whole‑house outages caused by a single circuit fault.

Fire‑Resistant Construction
Modern consumer units are manufactured with non‑combustible metal enclosures, reducing fire spread and improving overall safety compared to older plastic boards.

Capacity for Future Additions
An upgraded board provides space and capability for future circuits such as EV chargers, solar PV, battery storage, heat pumps, or additional sockets and lighting. This makes your installation more adaptable and cost‑effective long‑term.

A quick tip if your electrics keep tripping...
One of the most common call-outs I attend is a fuse board that keeps tripping for "no apparent reason."
Many homeowners put up with it for weeks or even months because it seems random.
In reality, it's often an early warning sign of:
* A faulty appliance
* Damaged wiring
* Water getting into an outside fitting
* An overloaded circuit
* Insulation resistance issues
The temptation is to keep resetting it and hope it goes away, but electrical faults rarely fix themselves and can often become more expensive to resolve later.
If your electrics are tripping regularly, try unplugging recently added appliances first and see if the problem disappears. If not, it's worth getting it properly investigated before it develops into a bigger issue.
We’re happy to point people in the right direction, even if it's just advice. Just call 07505 102940
Has anyone else had a mystery electrical fault that turned out to be something unexpected?

⚡ Why Home Battery Storage Without Solar Panels Still Makes Financial Sense

Home energy storage has long been marketed as the natural partner to rooftop solar. But the economics have shifted. Even without solar panels, a standalone battery can still deliver real, measurable savings — and in some cases outperform small solar arrays in payback time.

Time‑of‑Use Tariffs Make Batteries Pay for Themselves
The UK now has a wave of flexible tariffs — Octopus Flux, Intelligent, Agile, OVO Charge Anytime — that offer cheap overnight electricity (as low as 7–12p/kWh) and expensive peak rates (30–45p/kWh).

A battery lets you:
- Charge when electricity is cheap
- Discharge when electricity is expensive

Typical saving: £350–£650 per year for a 5–10 kWh battery, even with no solar at all.

Grid Services Pay You for Having a Battery
Some tariffs (e.g., Octopus PowerPack, Tesla Energy Plan) pay households for allowing their battery to support the grid.

You get:
- Payments for exporting during peak demand
- Lower import rates
- Reduced standing charges in some cases

A battery becomes a mini‑asset that earns money, not just stores it.

It’s a modular upgrade — and you can add solar later when prices drop or roof work is done.

💷 The Bottom Line
A standalone battery is cost‑effective when:

- You’re on a flexible tariff
- You use 8–20 kWh per day
- You have an EV or high evening usage
- You want backup power
- You plan to add solar later

Typical UK payback: 4–7 years, even with zero solar generation.
