Pinnacle Conservation is proud to announce the successful completion of works at 1 Museum Street, York — a landmark Grade II listed building that has now been beautifully transformed to welcome its newest occupant, the magnificent Topping & Company Booksellers.

Originally designed by Rawlins Gould in 1860, this building has lived many lives: a register office, a Conservative Club, council offices, and York’s tourist information centre. Its character — from the orange brick and stone dressings to the sash windows, Doric pilasters and sweeping staircase — has always told a story of heritage and purpose.

Today, it begins a new one.

Our completed works included:

*Formation of new internal openings and partitions
*Sensitive alterations to existing layouts
*Full refurbishment of original timber sash windows and doors
*Installation and restoration of joinery, skirting and secondary glazing
*Redecoration, repairs and new flooring throughout
*Construction of a new mezzanine structure and balustrades
*New lift and lift shaft created

Every element was delivered with care, respect and craftsmanship to ensure the building’s historic fabric was preserved while creating a functional, inspiring space for its next chapter.

And what a chapter it is.

Topping & Company Booksellers is now officially open — and it is truly spectacular.

If you haven’t visited yet, go take a look around. The shelves, the atmosphere, the sheer love of books woven into every corner… it’s a perfect match for this iconic building.

We’re honoured to have played a part in bringing this space back to life and supporting York’s vibrant cultural landscape.

One of the most rewarding aspects of conservation is bringing historic decorative finishes back to life using traditional materials and time-honoured techniques.

As part of our current conservation project at Everingham Chapel in East Riding of Yorkshire, we have been recreating a Siena faux marble finish as part of the wider restoration of the chapel’s historic decorative scheme.

The process begins with a warm yellow ochre ground, establishing the rich golden tone characteristic of Siena marble. Layers of raw sienna and burnt sienna in oil are then carefully built up to create depth, translucency, and the natural movement found within the stone. Fine veining is introduced using Venetian red and lamp black, applied and softened to replicate the marble’s organic structure.

Traditional tools, including feathers and a badger softener, play a vital role in the process, allowing colours and veins to be manipulated in a manner faithful to historic decorative painting practices. The objective is not simply to imitate stone, but to recreate the craftsmanship, skill, and visual richness achieved by the original marblers.

These traditional techniques remain an essential part of conserving our built heritage, helping to preserve not only the appearance of historic interiors but also the specialist skills and knowledge that shaped them.

Our team are underway with the sensitive restoration of a significant Grade II* listed private residence in East Riding, Yorkshire.

Following a recent fire, extensive damage was caused to the historic plaster detailing. Our Heritage Plasterers are carefully removing the affected areas, repairing and restoring where possible. Where sections are beyond repair, our lead Heritage Plasterer Andrew is taking detailed moulds and skilfully recreating the original features.
The property will also receive specialist decoration works in areas impacted by the fire.

Keep an eye on our social channels to see this remarkable restoration unfold.
