Alne Landfill Nature Recovery - BNG scheme: BGS-250625001🌳
When we took on the project to stabilise and make safe the abandoned landfill at Alne, York, we always wanted to give the site back to nature recovery and habitat creation. The task was larger than we originally anticipate and involved the installation of a surface water management system and manufacture / placement of soils specific to the nature recovery planting scheme that we had designed.
Four years later we have been granted certification from Natural England as a Biodiversity Net Gain (scheme). We've already implemented the scheme with the planting of 5,000 trees, but this is just the start. Over the next year there will be another 10,000 trees planted and the establishment of the wild flower rich grasslands. Once the planting is complete we will manage the scheme for minimum of 30 years consistent with Habitat Management and Monitoring plan.
Over time we're hoping to add more land to the biodiversity scheme to create corridor of nature recovery which links to other nature based projects.
Everything starts with small steps.
