Scientists report that Antarctica's Hektoria Glacier retreated approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) in only 15 months after its protective floating ice shelf collapsed. The rapid retreat is among the fastest ever observed and highlights how quickly glaciers can respond once natural barriers disappear.
Glaciers across Antarctica contain enough frozen water to raise global sea levels by tens of meters if completely melted, making accelerated ice loss one of the most closely monitored indicators of climate change. Researchers warn that continued warming could increase the frequency of similarly rapid glacier retreats.
