In addition to land Surveying and investigation, mineral exploration and maping we want to talk about an important element, the only one named after a demon: cobalt!
Cobalt is named for the German word "kobold," a demon that haunted mines and dark forests. It was named for that because German miners happened upon it while mining silver and quickly came to dislike it. Cobalt ore can strongly resemble silver ore, but when the miners would try to smelt the silver out of the rock, it wouldn't work. Instead they'd have useless slag. And cobalt can cause serious health effects at high exposure too. So the miners called cobalt after the demons that haunted them in the mines.
Today, we know what cobalt is, and it's no longer considered undesirable slag but rather a vital element to modern life. Cobalt is one of our 35 critical mineral resources, because of its role in batteries and superalloys: Continue following us for more information on our precious local minerals. Thank you.
