Celebrating a decade of excellence with a field trip that energized our passion! 🌟

Last month, SPE UMaT student chapter members explored the dynamic world of energy with visits to Baker Hughes OFE in Takoradi and Genser Energy in Kumasi. Our two groups gained invaluable insights into cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices shaping the future of the industry. A big thank you to Baker Hughes OFE and Genser Energy for their warm welcome and for sharing their expertise. Here's to many more years of learning and innovation! πŸš€βš™οΈ

The Drillbotics competition is an international event organized by the Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS) of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), aiming to accelerate drilling automation in the oil and gas industry.

The 2024 Drillbotics competition featured teams from universities across various continents, with seven teams from six countries (Ghana, USA, Germany, Canada, Norway, and Malaysia) making it to the finals. Of these, three universities from Ghana, the USA, and Malaysia competed for Group A (virtual rig). Prior to the finals, two universities withdrew from the competition.

The UMaT Drillbotics Team participated in both the directional drilling and well control categories within Group A (virtual rig). The team won in their respective categories. The directional drilling team was judged the overall winner for Group A, and the well control team secured second place.

According to Drillbotics, the work done by the team highlighted several key trends in autonomous drilling, including advanced control systems, machine learning applications for real-time decision-making, innovative Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) designs, semantic data integration for improved system interoperability, and collision avoidance systems for multi-well planning.

🌟 Empowering Future Energy Leaders: Innovating for Sustainability 🌟

In celebration of our 10th Anniversary, the SPE UMaT Chapter hosted an insightful Career Fair and Seminar, in collaboration with the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. Our event was centered around the theme: Empowering the Next Generation: Innovating for a Sustainable Energy Future.

We were honored to have industry experts from Genser Energy and the Deputy Career Guidance and Outreach Committee Chairperson of SPE Ghana Section, Mr Samuel Stephen Nii Laryea Adjei as well as our esteemed lecturer, Solomon Asante-Okyere, PhD join us for a dynamic panel discussion. Their insights into sustainability and innovation were truly inspiring.

Additionally, students had the chance to connect with industry professionals, gaining practical knowledge and forging essential networks for their future careers.

A virtual seminar was hosted with Graham Mensa-Wilmot, P.E., Drilling Engineering Technical Director at XCIDRILL TECHNOLOGY. He led an engaging session on "Drilling Engineering: A Conversation with the New Age," focusing on career challenges and the impact of big data on drilling automation.

This event provided our students with the opportunity to learn from the best, gain invaluable insights, and network with industry professionals.

Thank you to all our speakers, participants, and organisers for making this event a success. Together, we are shaping the future of energy! πŸŒπŸ”‹

🌍 **Celebrating Innovation in Energy Transition** 🌍

As part of our 10th anniversary celebration, the SPE UMaT Chapter recently hosted an Interfaculty Energy Transition Project Competition. This event brought together the brightest minds from the Petroleum Engineering Students Association, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Economics and Management Students Association, Electrical and Electronics Students Association, and Geomatics Engineering Students Association to tackle a real-world challenge: "EcoCharge: Transforming Waste Heat into Clean Energy."

Participants were tasked with developing a fictional startup, EcoCharge, aimed at harnessing waste heat from industrial processes, power plants, and even everyday appliances to generate clean energy. Teams dived into market research, technology development, and business model creation, all while considering the environmental impact and potential contribution to global sustainability goals.

A big congratulations to the Petroleum Engineering Students Association for emerging as the winners of this competition! The event showcased not only the technical skills but also the innovative thinking of our students, highlighting their commitment to shaping a sustainable energy future.

Thank you to our participants, judges, and organizers for making this event a success!

Let's continue to shape the future of energy together!
