On the 8th of March which was International Women's Day, INFOCTESS-UEW (University of Education) celebrates the incredible contributions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). From pioneering breakthroughs in AI, cybersecurity, blockchain, and cloud computing to leading innovations in data science, software development, and IT leadership, women continue to reshape the digital landscape and drive technological advancements.
We recognize the visionary women who have shattered glass ceilings in IT, challenged biases, and created pathways for future generations. Their resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to innovation serve as an inspiration to all.
Empowering Women in Tech: Student Experiences
During our discussions with some speakers such as Professor Delali Kwasi Dake, Ph.D. Ernest Trekpah on International Women's Day in IT: Celebrating Women in Tech, students shared firsthand experiences of how they combine both the curriculum and navigating the industry as women in tech.
Many highlighted the challenges of being underrepresented in classrooms such as stereotypes and workplaces, facing gender biases, and struggling to access mentorship and leadership roles.
However, they also shared inspiring success stories:
💡 Breaking barriers by excelling in coding, cybersecurity, and cloud computing
📚 Gaining scholarships and mentorship opportunities to advance in STEM
🚀 Creating tech projects that address real-world problems
⚡ Encouraging younger girls to step into the world of technology
These stories remind us that representation matters and that every step taken by women in tech today paves the way for future generations.
Addressing the Gender Gap
Despite these achievements, women remain underrepresented in the tech industry, facing barriers such as unequal opportunities, gender biases, and lack of mentorship. To close this gap, we must Professor Delali Kwasi Dake, Ph.D. said that we need to :
-Encourage young girls to pursue STEM careers
-Expand access to tech education and mentorship
-Support women-led innovations and startups
-Advocate for equal pay, leadership roles, and fair policies
A Call to Action
As we celebrate today, we also ask:
- What challenges have you overcome as a woman in tech?
- What advice would you give to the next generation of women entering the field?
During the celebration, the ladies were treated to some delicious refreshments, engaged in exciting games, and had a fantastic time bonding and sharing experiences. It was not just a day of recognition but also a moment of joy, connection, and empowerment!
Let’s continue to break barriers, foster diversity and inclusion, and create an industry where everyone, regardless of gender, has equal opportunities to thrive. Together, we can build a future where innovation knows no limits!
