As a frontend developer, do you design for mobile first or desktop first?

Personally, I prefer desktop-first. Here’s why:

1. Complex Layouts: Some projects require detailed layouts and features that are easier to visualize and implement on larger screens first. Starting with desktop gives the flexibility to build everything without space constraints.

2. Gradual Scaling: I find it easier to scale down to mobile rather than trying to scale up. By designing for desktop, I can focus on enhancing the mobile experience later by optimizing for speed and usability.

3. Client Expectations: Often, clients review projects on their desktops, so starting with that ensures they see the full feature set from the beginning.

That said, the approach depends on the project goals and target audience. Which approach do you prefer? Let’s discuss the pros and cons!

I won't advise anyone to go to the university to learn programming.

I have a degree in computer science and 90% of the knowledge I use to build apps, teach my students was learned on YouTube, an online course and a programming book I bought independently.

I remember getting to uni very excited that I would learn all technologies necessary to build the app of my dreams.

Only to find out that we spent 1 year learning C programming, another year learning data structures and algorithms and the final year learning Java. This was a very disappointing experience.

Unfortunately a computer science degree is a glorified science degree.

You will learn maths, physics, chemistry tire and just learn the basics of programming.

There is little taught there that you actually use in the job.

So many people graduate with CS degree and even masters and they still have to pay for courses and bootcamp to get the real skills jobs require and compete with those who only took bootcamps and courses.

Unless there is a total update in CS curriculum in formal universities, ill say learn how to code and build stuff on your own.

Only go to uni if you really want to get the degree but it shouldn't be to learn how to code or learn how to build stuff.
