The Peace and Friendship Stadium is 40 years old. Its chillers are of the same age. Technical staff use to call them by the nickname “grannies”.
Icon Group was engaged in providing its “aged care” services to the legendary “grannies” over the period of the game "Olympiacos B.C. – Panathinaikos BC” last Saturday.

Our highly experienced master Giorgos Papoutsoglou exercised his art of being cool under challenging conditions and ICON’s contribution to the smooth operation of the stadium, with regard to its cooling remained inconspicuous, as nobody noticed the adversity of the “grannies” in the technical facility rooms. This event has been a historic example about how Sustainability can be put at stake, if technical staff is not „past-proof”, before a new technology takes over.

The only leakage of water we can tolerate is that of a Clepsydra

Alike Atlas, who was condemned to hold up the sky for eternity, according to Greek Mythology, some girls at neglected areas of Earth hold up the water supply to their families under harsh conditions of mounting scarcity of water resources.

Nevertheless, Sustainable Management of Water Resources can’t be disconnected from some empathy for this situation. This is why we can’t remain indifferent against connections, susceptible to leakages and subsequent water losses.

We are SOBER in Use of Technology

This is how Greeks invented the world’s oldest computer, the Antikythera Mechanism, 2.000 years before modern technology and proved the ancients were far ahead of their time.

The factual value of computers lies in the algorithms they are running, regardless of the respective hardware, advanced or obsolete.

Similarly, the value of buildings lies in their secret composition and operation algorithms with regard to their overall energy performance. They are embedding energy, consumed for the production and carriage of their building elements and are also storing energy within the latter, according to their thermal capacity.

In other words buildings can be designed to excel in sustainability as regenerative energy storage systems, compared with electric batteries of limited longevity, dependent on finite geological resources and intrinsically perishable technology.

The less a building is dependent on technology, which unavoidably undergoes depreciation and requires respective maintenance, the better is its perspective to prove sustainable in the long term.

The less we invest in quasi-perishable technology the more financial resources are released to be deployed towards a resilient and energy responsive envelope for the sake of sustainability.

The more algorithm minded is our approach to building design the more efficient is the resulting building energy performance. This is why we give precedence to software instead of hardware.

This is how we think of sustainability.
This is why we struggle for.
