Why Do Cartons Jam During Pickup or Opening in a Case Erector?
A carton jam is not always a machine-speed problem. If flat cases are not picked, opened or transferred consistently, check the process in this order:
1. Corrugated case condition — Warped, damp or damaged blanks can stick together or resist opening.
2. Magazine loading — Too much pressure, poor stack alignment or an incorrect magazine angle can prevent clean separation.
3. Vacuum and suction cups — Check vacuum level, hose leakage, dirty or worn cups and pickup position.
4. Guide adjustment — Guides that are too tight can squeeze the blanks; guides that are too loose allow unstable movement.
5. Scores and manufacturer’s joint — Weak scores, excessive glue or inconsistent case construction can make the case difficult to open and square.
6. Opening and flap-folding timing — The case must open fully before the bottom flaps begin folding.
7. Downstream backpressure — A blocked Case Packer, Carton Sealer or conveyor can stop discharge and create a jam inside the Case Erector.
Do not solve recurring jams only by increasing air pressure or reducing speed. First identify whether the cause is the carton blank, the Carton Erector setup or the downstream line.
