ΑΝΑΚΑΙΝΙΣΗ ΤΟΥ KENTRIKOY ΚΑΤΑΣΤΗΜΑΤΟΣ ΤΗΣ KARVELAS| EURONICS
Η αναδιαμόρφωση του κτιρίου Καρβελάς/Euronics στο Ηράκλειο προσεγγίζει το υφιστάμενο κέλυφος ως τμήμα ενός αστικού τοπίου όπου συνυπάρχουν η βιομηχανική μνήμη και οι γραμμές των Ενετικών Οχυρώσεων. Η μελέτη επιδιώκει να αποκαταστήσει τη μορφολογική συνοχή του κτιρίου και να το επανεντάξει ενεργά στο περιβάλλον του.
Δύο βασικές χειρονομίες οργανώνουν τον όγκο: το ενιαίο οριζόντιο προστέγασμα στο ισόγειο, που συγκρατεί την πρόσοψη και ορίζει τη σχέση της με τον δρόμο, και η πέργκολα στο δώμα, που ενοποιεί τα υψηλότερα επίπεδα. Η υλικότητα παραμένει ουδέτερη και γήινη, επιτρέποντας στο κτίριο να «διαβάσει» το γύρω τοπίο χωρίς μίμηση.
Στα νέα στοιχεία της όψης, λοξές τομές και γραμμικές γεωμετρίες αναφέρονται αφαιρετικά τόσο στους Ενετικούς προμαχώνες όσο και στη βιομηχανική αρχιτεκτονική της περιοχής (βιομηχανικό συγκρότημα "Αθηνά" ), προσδίδοντας στο κτίριο πιο σύγχρονη και αναγνωρίσιμη ταυτότητα.
Οι παρεμβάσεις ενεργειακής απόδοσης — εφαρμογή θερμοπρόσοψης, μείωση υαλοστασίων και χρήση κατακόρυφων περσίδων— ενσωματώνονται στον συνολικό μορφολογικό χειρισμό, περιορίζοντας τα θερμικά φορτία και βελτιώνοντας την περιβαλλοντική συμπεριφορά του κελύφους.
Το αποτέλεσμα είναι μια καθαρότερη, συμπαγής αρχιτεκτονική παρουσία που σέβεται το ιστορικό πλαίσιο ενώ εκφράζει μια σύγχρονη εμπορική ταυτότητα.

RENOVATION OF KARVELAS EURONICS FLAGSHIP STORE
The redesign of the Karvelas / Euronics building in Heraklion approaches the existing shell as part of an urban landscape where industrial memory coexists with the traces of the Venetian fortifications. The design aims to restore the building’s morphological coherence and to actively reintegrate it into its urban context.

Two main architectural gestures organize the building volume:
the continuous horizontal canopy at ground level, which stabilizes the façade and defines its relationship with the street, and the pergola on the roof level, which visually unifies the upper volumes. Materiality remains neutral and earthy, allowing the building to respond to its surroundings without imitation.

Within the new façade elements, diagonal cuts and linear geometries reference, in an abstract manner, both the Venetian bastions and the industrial architecture of the area, giving the building a more contemporary and distinctive identity.

Energy efficiency interventions — including the application of an external thermal insulation system, reduction of glazed surfaces, and the use of vertical shading louvers — are fully integrated into the overall architectural composition, reducing thermal loads and improving the environmental performance of the envelope.

The result is a cleaner and more compact architectural presence that respects the historical context while expressing a contemporary commercial identity.

AERAKIS S.A. Factory: Redefining Industrial Aesthetics

The project forms part of an ongoing collaboration with AERAKIS S.A., following the architectural renovation of the company’s retail store in 2022—an intervention that redefined its commercial identity by integrating long-standing heritage with contemporary functional and spatial requirements. In the present commission, this design logic is extended to the production environment, placing emphasis on clarity, efficiency, and architectural coherence.
In this context, the architectural intervention transforms an existing steel-frame industrial shell into a contemporary Furniture and Curtain Manufacturing Workshop for AERAKIS S.A. Here, production lines, material flows, and administrative functions are reorganized into a clear and flexible spatial system that supports efficient and uninterrupted operation.
At the level of the building envelope, the strategy focuses on thermal and spatial upgrading. The facades are reconfigured through enhanced insulation and an external perforated screen, which acts as a passive solar-shading device and light filter. Through this layered approach, depth and rhythm are introduced to the building volume, establishing a distinct architectural identity while maintaining its industrial character.
Internally, the spatial reorganization is supported by energy-efficient glazing, upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, external fire-escape stair cores, and loading canopies. As a result, operational continuity, safety, and improved energy performance are ensured.
The project has been permitted and is currently under construction.
