𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝟱 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

During inspection of the 𝗖𝗣𝗣 𝗛𝗨𝗕 of an 𝟭𝟴,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗗𝗪𝗧 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆, a severe crack was detected on the crank pin of a blade carrier - a critical component operating under extreme loads and tight tolerances.
The OEM assessment classified the component as 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿, with an estimated 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 for a replacement.

To minimize vessel downtime, KIMI proposed manufacturing a new blade carrier through reverse engineering.
Following approval by the 𝗢𝗘𝗠 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝗞𝗜𝗠𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.
The component was successfully installed and the 𝗖𝗣𝗣 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁:
✔𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲: 5 days instead of 6 months
✔𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: OEM-level precision and reliability
✔𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁: significant savings in off-hire costs and procurement delays

𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 | 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱-𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗥𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 < 𝟭 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸

A 150m Ro-Ro/Passenger vessel, operated by Attica Group, suffered a critical rudder stock failure. Following inspection, the component was declared beyond repair.

With a dry-dock window limited to just 10 days and no spare available worldwide within the required timeframe, manufacturing became the only viable solution.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
KIMI completed successfully the manufacturing of a new rudder stock, based on reverse engineering and OEM specifications, under continuous class supervision.

From raw material to Class approval, the process included:

• Metallurgical verification & class-approved testing (tensile, hardness, impact, UT)
• Heavy-duty 4-axis CNC machining (Ø440 mm × 6 m, 6 t)
• Strict in-process dimensional control
• Final concentricity: < 0.03 mm

When critical engine components fail, long OEM replacement lead times can severely impact operations.
In a recent case involving a 𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗕&𝗪 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗳𝘁, worn journals required restoration. The original manufacturer proposed a replacement with a lead time of four months, which would have resulted in significant vessel downtime.
Instead, KIMI delivered an OEM-level repair solution using advanced laser cladding technology, restoring the camshaft journal surfaces and completing successfully the entire repair 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸.
The worn areas were fully restored through controlled metallurgical deposition and precision machining, restoring the component to its original dimensions and tolerances, allowing the camshaft to safely return to service.
