There has been a lot of focus lately on technologies for a more sustainable maritime industry. This short video from Euronews and the European Commission is a good reminder of why that matters — and of how much work it takes to get there.

The blue economy covers everything that depends on the sea: maritime transport, fishing, tourism, aquaculture, and ocean energy. Across the EU, these sectors generated €624 billion and supported 3.6 million jobs in 2021. For Greece, it is not a distant policy term. It is tied to the sea that has shaped our history, our work, and our place in the world.

The video also makes an honest point: many of the solutions still face real obstacles to scaling — from infrastructure to supply chains. Progress is not automatic, and not every promising technology is ready today.

That is why, at OCEANKING, we focus on technologies that are already delivering — proven at sea, while continuing to evolve. Working alongside Greek and international shipowners, we consider the sea not only as the foundation of our industry but also as a responsibility we share.

The oceans regulate our climate, feed billions, and connect the world. Their sustainability matters to everyone — and few industries are as tied to it, or as responsible for it, as ours.

That responsibility is now also a commercial one. According to the OECD, international shipping accounted for around 2.5% of energy-related CO₂ emissions in 2024, and with FuelEU Maritime, the EU ETS, and the IMO's targets in force, efficiency and emissions are shaping both operating costs and asset values.

At OCEANKING, we have invested in building a dedicated decarbonization portfolio. No single technology answers the challenge on its own, so we have focused on partnerships across several areas such as wind-assisted propulsion, electrification, hybrid systems and energy storage, propulsion optimisation, waste heat recovery and heating systems.

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with Baumüller Services, a German manufacturer of intelligent drive and automation systems, expanding OCEANKING's presence in marine electrification solutions for the Greek market.

Under the agreement, OCEANKING will support the sales and distribution of Baumüller's drive systems for the shipbuilding industry across Greece. The groundwork for the collaboration began in late 2025, and the contract was signed in May 2026.

"We are excited to work with OCEANKING to drive innovations in ship propulsion, charging stations, and electrification in Greece," said Andreas Baumüller, Managing Partner of the Baumüller Group — a sentiment we genuinely share.

A few weeks ago, as part of our ongoing commitment to the next generation of maritime professionals, we took part in "Ερχόμαστε προς τη Θάλασσα," the educational program by https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0wGHbX0 (a Naftika Chronika initiative), dedicated to connecting the maritime community with young people.

Our General Manager, Carola Yannouli, joined the discussion "The Technologies of the Future for Shipping," held under the auspices of MARTECMA and CIMAC Hellas. Alongside fellow speakers, she explored the technological and digital transformation of the modern merchant fleet—from new and alternative fuels and burner technology to energy efficiency, environmental protection, and the regulatory and safety challenges these innovations bring.

Addressing young people from Athenian universities such as the University of West Attica (ΠΑΔΑ), the session became an open dialogue with future professionals—reflecting exactly the kind of knowledge-sharing we believe in. Many thanks to SAFETY4SEA for a video interview that gave us the opportunity to share OCEANKING's perspective and expertise, alongside some of our valued partners.

Our General Manager, Carola Yannouli, spoke about long-term strategic collaborations, the role of proven technologies, and the path toward more sustainable and efficient operations. A particularly interesting part of the conversation focused on the technologies currently gaining the most attention for reducing carbon footprint and improving vessel performance. With uncertainty still surrounding future zero-carbon fuels, shipowners are increasingly turning to proven solutions that deliver immediate, measurable results—from high-efficiency fans, heat recovery and LED lighting to propeller optimization, energy-saving devices, and wind-assisted propulsion.

The final day of Posidonia 2026 was a particularly rewarding one for us, as we took part in the 10th Youth Day, organized by the YES to Shipping Forum—a day dedicated to connecting young people with the maritime industry.

Our General Manager, Carola Yannouli, took the stage to share insights from her own professional journey and to answer questions from the young attendees. We were also glad to welcome many of them to our stand, where they had the chance to meet our team and get a first-hand look at the maritime industry up close. A key moment of the day was the presentation of a global survey conducted across 12 countries, which found that the greatest barrier to attracting young people to shipping is not a lack of interest, but limited awareness and access to the industry—a gap we are glad to help bridge.

We are pleased to expand our long-standing cooperation with G&O Maritime Group, strengthening a relationship that spans many years. OCEANKING has now signed a new agency agreement to represent Atlas Incinerators in Greece. The agreement was signed at Posidonia 2026 by our General Manager, Carola Yannouli, and René Christian Olsen, Head of After Sales at G&O Maritime Group.

Through this agreement, OCEANKING can now support shipowners across Greece with ATLAS incinerators for both newbuilding and retrofit projects. ATLAS Incinerators are widely recognized for their robust construction, high combustion efficiency, and reliable performance under demanding onboard conditions. The latest model, the X10 TITAN, delivers lower fuel consumption, reduced maintenance, and significant CAPEX and OPEX savings.

The partnership provides shipowners with continuity of support throughout the equipment lifecycle. Customers have access to genuine OEM parts, ATLAS-approved engineers, and a global service network, complemented by OCEANKING's local technical expertise. We were honored to sponsor the "Ερχόμεθα προς την Θάλασσαν" Award ("We are coming to the Sea") Award for Contribution to Maritime Thought at the 18th Efkranti Awards, organized by Naftika Chronika—a ceremony that this year also marked the magazine's 95th anniversary.

The award was presented to Capt. Panagiotis N. Tsakos, in recognition of decades of contribution to maritime dialogue through the pages of Naftika Chronika. Since 1978, Capt. Tsakos has shared more than 35 articles and interviews, consistently championing the improvement of maritime education in Greece and the need to attract new generations to the sea—values that resonate deeply with us.

Our CEO, K. Hasiotis, and General Manager, Carola Yannouli, had the privilege of presenting the award, which was received on behalf of Capt. Tsakos by Charalambos Hatzimichail, General Manager of Tsakos Shipping & Trading SA.
