We are proud to share a significant achievement for our lab: the publication of the article “Rolling in the Deep of Cognitive and AI Biases”, authored by Datalab Director Prof. Athena Vakali and former researcher Dr Nicoleta Tantalaki, in the prestigious journal Communications of the ACM (CACM) with an IF 12.2!

🧠 This work addresses a timely and critical challenge in AI: understanding how human cognitive heuristics and computational AI biases intertwine across the AI lifecycle, shaping fairness, decision-making, and outcomes in high-impact domains.

🌍 Published in CACM, a globally recognized journal for influential research and dialogue in the computing and information technology fields for more than 60 years, this novel contribution highlights the importance of viewing AI not merely as a technical system, but as a socio-technical ecosystem deeply influenced by human behavior and decision-making processes.

🔍 Key insights include:
🟩 Cognitive shortcuts and implicit heuristics embedded in human decision making can migrate into AI design, influencing system behavior and leading to unfair or unintended outcomes.
🟩The introduced HAI-ROLL (Human-to-AI Roll) framework systematically identifies actions that act as sources of AI bias during the AI lifecycle (pre-processing, in-processing, post-processing), links them to the underlying human heuristics, and reveals hidden relationships between human cognitive processes and algorithmic biases.
🟩HAI-ROLL provides insightful and actionable for bias-aware AI design, reframing fairness not as a technical afterthought but as a human-centered responsibility woven into the entire AI development process.

We’re excited to share that Prof. Athena Vakali represented at the IEEE 23rd Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON 2026) in New Cairo, Egypt (Feb 2–4), one of the flagship IEEE Region 8 conferences.
