The ninth of the Chinese 24 solar terms, Mangzhong, or Grain in Ear, falls on June 5 this year. It signifies the ripening of crops and is also a busy period for farmers. The arrival of Mangzhong brings hot and humid weather across most parts of China. Old customs include praying for good harvests and tasting sour fruits to beat the summer heat. As ripe wheat is harvested, rice and beans are sown in the fields, making it a crucial turning point in farming cycles.
