Hong Kong enjoys relatively low geohazard risks—but are we as safe as we think? With Japan (a second home for many of us) on high alert due to earthquake predictions, how cautious should travelers be? And if disaster strikes, would you know how to react?

We are delighted to announce our collaboration with the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and the Geological Society of Hong Kong - 香港地質學會 in starting a talk series this June 2025, "Explore The Science of Geohazards with Experts"— where specialists uncover the real risks, survival strategies, and Hong Kong’s true safety.

PART ONE SERIES HIGHLIGHTS (June-July):
🗓️28 June 2025 Earthquakes and Tsunamis - Natural Disasters You Need to Know About (Mr David Hui)
🗓️5 July 2025 Geohazards in Japan: When is the Next Major Earthquake Most Likely to Strike? (Prof. Setsuya Nakada)
🗓️25 July 2025 Earthquakes in the Hong Kong Region: From Global Models to Home Measurements (Prof. Lung Sang Chan)
(times and venues are on poster)

Technical Visit to Joint Cavern Development at Anderson Road Quarry Site

On the morning of 22 March 2025, Geological Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Regional Group of the Society of London and Macao Geosciences Society jointly organised a technical visit to the Joint Cavern Development at the Anderson Road Quarry Site (Contract No. GE/2022/14). The visit provided an excellent opportunity for participants to observe the progress of this groundbreaking engineering endeavor and gain insights into the geological and geotechnical challenges and innovative solutions being implemented.

The visit began with a comprehensive presentation on the project background and the geotechnical works being undertaken. Attendees were briefed on the innovative techniques of the project, including the design and construction of the cavern complex with the smart site safety system. The presentation also highlighted the Modular Integrated Construction method of structural and architectural elements to create functional spaces within the caverns within a tight project programme. This overview set the stage for the site visit, providing a clear understanding of the project's objectives and complexities.

Following the presentation, the group proceeded to the site to observe the ongoing construction activities, including blast hole drilling and structural support installation. The scale of the cavern development was impressive, with heavy machinery and skilled workers meticulously executing the excavation and reinforcement of the rock mass. Attendees were able to witness firsthand the challenges of working within a rock mass, including the need for precise blasting, rock dowelling and shotcreting to ensure structural integrity. One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to engage with the project team and discuss the geotechnical and engineering innovations being employed. The team shared insights into the design considerations for the cavern complex, including ventilation, lighting, and fire safety systems tailored as well as the sophisticated underground construction sequence. They also explained the measures taken to minimize environmental impact, such as dust and noise control during blasting and excavation.

In conclusion, the technical visit to the Joint Cavern Development at Anderson Road Quarry Site was both informative and inspiring. It provided a rare glimpse into the complexities of constructing large-scale underground facilities and highlighted the innovative approaches being employed to address the project's unique challenges. The visit underscored the importance of such technical exchanges in fostering knowledge sharing and advancing engineering practices in Hong Kong.
