Joint Technical Seminar on Passive Radiative Cooling Technology

🌼Programme Highlight:

As temperatures rise and decarbonisation becomes a global priority, efficient cooling solutions are increasingly important. This presentation introduces passive mid-infrared radiative cooling, an electricity-free technology that dissipates heat through the atmospheric window (8–13 μm), achieving sub-ambient cooling without energy consumption.

Attendees will learn the science behind the technology, inspired by the Saharan silver ant and breakthrough research published in Science. The session will explain how i2Cool's proprietary coatings and films achieve up to 95% solar reflectivity and 95% mid-infrared emissivity, reducing surface temperatures by up to 42°C.

Real-world case studies, including the Dubai Mall project in the UAE and a 10,000 m² factory
rooftop installation for Crystal International Group in China, will demonstrate practical applications, energy-saving performance, and verification methodologies. The presentation will
also highlight opportunities for deploying passive cooling solutions to support energy efficiency and decarbonisation goals across the built environment.

Beyond architecture, the presentation will explore the broad cross-industry impact of the technology, spanning power and telecommunications infrastructure, logistics and cold chain, photovoltaic systems, and industrial storage. Attendees will leave with a comprehensive understanding of how passive radiative cooling can be integrated into diverse sectors to reduce operational costs, extend equipment lifespan, and contribute meaningfully to decarbonisation goals.

【The technical visit to China Lesso Automated Accessories & Mold workshops and PV Workshop in Foshan】

👷🏼‍♂️👷🏻‍♀️ The technical visit to China Lesso Automated Accessories & Mold workshops and PV Workshop, jointly organized by HKIE BS Division and Electrical Division, was successfully held on 18 July 2026. The event received an overwhelming response, with 30 members joining.

The visit commenced at the headquarters of China Lesso Group, where members first visited the impression hall to view a diverse array of engineering products, including specialized piping systems designed for building and agricultural facilities. The delegation then proceeded to the Automated Accessories and Mold Workshop. During this session, members observed modernized production lines and gained valuable insights into high-precision automated manufacturing and advanced mold technologies, highlighting the rapid advancement of smart logistics and production efficiency.

In the afternoon session, members and representative of China Lesso Group has conducted a fruitful technical exchange on the way forwards of the use of standard of BS Installation in HK. After that, the members were led to visit the Photovoltaic Workshop. Members engaged in an in-depth exploration of advanced solar energy application and the detailed appreciation of the whole production line for the Crystalline Silicon PV modules through the factory tour as the concluding event for the visit.

Lastly, we would like to express our gratitude to China Lesso Group for arranging this fruitful technical visit for our members on latest developments for manufacturing of BS Installation in Greater Bay Area.👏🏻👏🏻🤝🏻

✨ Milestones Ahead –Excellent Building Award 2026✨

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers – Building Services Division is proudly serving the building society as we approach our 40th Anniversary in 2026. We remain committed to promoting the advancement and exchange of technical information and ideas among members and related societies.

As part of this milestone, we are honoured to present the HKIE-BS Division Excellent Building Award 2026, following the successful launch of the inaugural Award in 2023. Organised by HKIE-BSD, the Award encourages and rewards building projects that adopt advanced and effective building services to achieve excellence.

The Year of the Excellent Building Award 2026 highlights landmark achievements in both new and existing building categories. The Henderson by Henderson Land Development was recognised as the Year of Excellent Award for new building, while Alexandra House by Hongkong Land received the Year of Excellent Award for existing building. These projects exemplify outstanding achievements in sustainability, innovation, and engineering technology. As noted by the Organising Committee Chairman, “Engineering is a medium to serve humanity. Its true value lies in improving lives and building a sustainable future.”

The Award has quickly become a recognised benchmark for excellence within the industry, showcasing projects that embrace sustainability, digitalisation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Smart Energy For A Greener Future🌿

HKIE-BS Division is thrilled to celebrate the successful completion of the 2026 Shaanxi (Xi’an) – Hong Kong Joint Symposium, held in Xi’an from 28 June to 1 July 2026. Keynote speakers Mr. Raymond P**N, JP, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services and Mr. XU-wei, Chief Scientist of the Building Environment and Energy Research Institute at the China Academy of Building Research were invited. The symposium attracted a diverse audience of approx. 120 attendees.

Alongside co-organizers CIBSE-HKR, ASHRAE-HKC, PolyU (BEEE), and our Mainland partners, we gathered leading building services professionals, researchers, and academics to explore the future of the built environment. Key discussions centered on:

[👩‍🔧 WIBSE Experience Sharing cm Personal Image Workshop]

A massive thank you to all the talented women who joined us for the WIBSE Experience Sharing cm Personal Image Workshop! It was an empowering evening focused on our theme, "Shaping Visibility for Women in Engineering," filled with vibrant energy and invaluable professional insights. 🚀

🌸 The event began with warm welcome remarks from Ir Alice CHOW - President of HKIE, followed by insightful sharing from Ir John CHAN - Chairman of HKIE-BSD, and Ir Marsden KONG - Vice Chairman of HKIE-BSD, emphasizing the importance of empowering and supporting women in the engineering community.

The workshop included interactive group discussions on various topics, fostering a strong sense of community and support among participants. From navigating career paths and mentorship to enhancing work-life balance and site communication, the sessions provided a platform for sharing valuable experiences and strategies to help women engineers shape their visibility at work.

Following the discussions, participants took part in a Personal Image Workshop by Ms. Carmen WAN. The session provided practical tips on professional presence and confidence, helping everyone refine their business image and professional identity.
