The accelerating pace of the internet, AI, and digitalization has led to a surge in demand for computing power. Data centers, as computing infrastructure, are experiencing rapid growth. Data centers can be categorized as enterprise data centers, internet data centers, and other institutional data centers. Data centers occupy large areas and house numerous devices. They typically consist of primary equipment (servers, storage devices, and network equipment) and auxiliary equipment (power supply, cooling systems, and security monitoring systems).
Data centers are significant electricity consumers, with electricity costs accounting for 60% to 70% of total operating costs. By 2025, the data center electricity consumption in China is projected to approach 400 billion kW·h, representing over 5% of the nation's total electricity consumption.
Data centers have extremely high requirements for power supply reliability and quality. On the one hand, data centers typically require 24/7 uninterrupted power supply; on the other hand, their power demand fluctuates, especially during AI-intensive computing tasks in complex CPU+GPU cloud computing scenarios, where power consumption can surge.
Energy storage systems are becoming a key support for ensuring the stable operation of data centers because they can provide emergency power in the event of a power grid failure. Data shows that with the rapid advancement of AI technology and the increase in data center rack computing power, the global data center energy storage capacity is expected to increase from 16.5 Gwh in 2024 to 209.4 Gwh in 2030.
Data center energy storage has two main functions:
1)Improving energy efficiency and economy: In the face of alternating peak and valley periods of the power grid, energy storage can flexibly and dynamically adjust capacity to help balance power supply and demand, significantly improve the efficiency of green power utilization, and save electricity costs.
2)Ensuring power reliability: Data centers have very high requirements for a stable supply of electricity. When the mains power is abnormal, the energy storage system can intervene immediately and seamlessly to provide continuous power to ICT equipment, avoid data loss and service interruption, and effectively ensure the stability of the power supply system.
