What an incredible moment at the HKSTP Grand Hall for the "Together to NEXT - HKSTP 25th Anniversary Prelude" on 31st Aug! 🌟 We are beyond proud to be part of this journey as an HKSTP incubated company.

Looking back, it’s been a wild ride: from preparing our application in 2024, passing the interview in 2025, and officially moving in that July, to finally passing our Demo-day in mid-2026 and entering the IncuBoost Stage! It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come alongside the Park's growth.

At the event, it was truly inspiring to see so many veterans and pioneers in Hong Kong's R&D industry. You are our benchmarks and our ultimate goals, constantly pushing us to give our absolute best! 💪

The Occupational Safety and Health Council’s(OSHC) three key principles—the “20/80 Rule,” “Keep It Ventilated,” and “Avoid Heat Sources”—are backed by solid science.

- The 20/80 Rule: Don’t Overfeed or Starve Your Battery
Lithium-ion batteries experience the most stress at extreme charge levels. Above 80%, the cathode operates at high voltage, accelerating electrolyte oxidation. Below 20%, the anode structure endures unnecessary strain. Think of it like working under constant pressure—eventually, something breaks.

Instead of always charging to 100%, try topping up your device throughout the day. Most modern phones and laptops include “optimised charging” features that automatically cap the charge at around 80%—use them.

- Keep It Ventilated: Heat Needs to Escape
Charging generates heat—it’s simply chemistry at work. In confined spaces (e.g., under a pillow or inside a drawer), heat cannot dissipate, causing the battery temperature to rise. This accelerates side reactions and may lead to thermal runaway—a dangerous chain reaction where heat begets more heat.

Research shows that elevated temperatures during charging significantly accelerate battery aging. So always charge your devices in a well‑ventilated area.

- Avoid Heat Sources: Direct Sunlight and Appliances Are Hidden Threats
Direct sunlight, heat‑generating appliances, and hot car interiors are all dangerous for lithium batteries. High temperatures speed up electrolyte decomposition and gas generation, causing the battery to swell—or worse, catch fire.

There have been real‑life reports of power banks left inside vehicles on hot days, leading to fires. This isn’t an urban legend—it’s basic lithium‑ion chemistry.

- Stop Using Damaged Batteries Immediately
Last but not least: if your battery shows signs of deformation, swelling, overheating, or unusual odours, internal damage is already irreversible. Stop using it immediately. This isn’t a minor flaw—it’s a clear warning sign.

- 20/80 法則:別把電池「餵太飽」也別「餓過頭」
鋰電池的化學結構決定了它在極端電量狀態下特別「辛苦」。當電量達到 80% 以上,電池正極處於高電壓狀態,電解液會加速氧化分解;而電量低於 20% 時,負極結構則承受不必要的應力。這就像人長期處於高壓或疲憊狀態,身體早晚會出問題。

日常應用中,與其堅持「充滿 100% 才安心」,不如養成「隨用隨充」的習慣。現代手機和筆電多設有「最佳化充電」功能,能自動將電量維持在 80% 左右,善用這些設定就是最簡單的保護措施。

- 保持通風:熱氣要有地方散
充電是化學反應的過程,必然伴隨熱能產生。若在密閉空間(如枕頭下、抽屜內)充電,熱量無法有效散逸,電池溫度持續上升,會加速內部副反應,甚至引發「熱失控」——即溫度越高反應越快、反應越快溫度越高的惡性循環。

研究顯示,高溫環境下持續充電,電池老化速度顯著加快。所以,充電時請確保周圍空氣流通,別讓電池「焗桑拿」。

- 避開熱源:陽光和電器都是「隱形殺手」
陽光直射、發熱電器旁、夏天車內——這些「高溫地帶」對鋰電池極為不利。高溫會加速電解液分解及氣體產生,導致電池膨脹,嚴重時甚至起火。

曾經有新聞報導,車主將手機或行動電源遺留在車內曝曬,結果因高溫導致電池膨脹起火。這並非罕見個案,而是鋰電池的物理特性決定的。

- 出現異狀立即停用
最後,也是最重要的底線:當電池出現變形、膨脹、過熱或異味,代表內部已發生不可逆的化學損傷,必須立即停止使用。這不是「還能用一陣子」的小毛病,而是明確的危險訊號。

Behind the Scenes at CLP’s Sustainability Conference – What We Learnt & Who We Met

UTL was thrilled to join the “Sustainable Residential Living Conference 2026” yesterday, thanks to a kind recommendation from HKSTP. Representing the Green Tech community, we soaked up valuable insights from CLP Power and EMSD on the road ahead for residential electrification and grid modernisation.

We fully agree that strengthening grid resilience is crucial. Yet the reality is stark: upgrading the entire network costs billions, and even after huge investments, end-users can still face flickering lights or voltage dips caused by ageing building wiring or sudden EV-charger clusters. That’s exactly why UTL focuses on the user side—delivering plug-and-play solutions like HiveCloud and PowerStabilizer that stabilise power quality right where people live and work.

The best part? Meeting fellow HKSTP companies face-to-face. 昨日承蒙香港科技園推薦,UTL 得以綠色科技創新者身份出席「2026可持續住宅生活研討會」,與中電及機電工程署的專家交流未來住宅電氣化及電網發展方向,收穫良多。

我們深明提升電網韌性的重要性,但現實是全面升級電網耗資龐大;而即使電網加大投資,市民仍可能因大廈舊電線或電動車充電樁集中使用而遇到電壓波動等問題。因此 UTL 選擇從用戶端入手,透過 HiveCloud 及 PowerStabilizer 等方案,直接改善用電體驗。

From Heat Domes to Virtual Power Plants: Managing Power Quality in Extreme Weather

Record-breaking heat has hit Hong Kong once again! The urban areas recorded a high of 36.9°C, while Sheung Shui reached a scorching 39.8°C. Many residents felt the intensity like never before. Beyond Hong Kong, parts of western Germany, northern Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Portugal also experienced record-high temperatures this summer. Why is the weather so extreme this year? Three main factors are at play.

First, the El Niño phenomenon has warmed Pacific Ocean waters, shifting global weather patterns and making summers hotter across Asia and Europe. Second, a “heat dome” — a strong high-pressure system acting like a lid — traps hot air near the ground, preventing it from rising and cooling. Third, the urban heat island effect worsens the situation in cities. Concrete buildings, asphalt roads, and glass towers absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night, keeping temperatures elevated even after sunset.

These extreme conditions place heavy stress on the power grid. When everyone turns on air conditioners at once, electricity demand surges sharply. At the same time, high temperatures reduce the cooling efficiency of cables and transformers, lowering transmission capacity. Power quality also suffers — voltage may fluctuate or drop, harmonic distortion increases, and equipment wears out faster, potentially affecting supply stability over time.

At the user end, our intelligent energy management systems (HiveCLoud) can help coordinate consumption patterns to ease peak demand on the grid while supporting more stable power quality. Some versions also incorporate virtual power plant (VPP) capabilities, enabling them to provide backup power to critical facilities when needed, offering an additional layer of resilience during extreme weather.

從熱穹到虛擬電廠:高溫天氣下的電力新挑戰與應對

破紀錄高溫再次襲港!本港市區最高錄得36.9℃,上水更達39.8℃,令不少市民感到前所未有的酷熱。除了香港之外,德國西部、意大利北部、荷蘭、愛爾蘭及葡萄牙部分地區亦同時出現破紀錄高溫。究竟今年夏天為何特別熱?主要有三個因素。

首先是「聖嬰現象」(El Niño),太平洋海水異常升溫,改變全球氣候模式,令亞洲及歐洲多地夏季更為炎熱。其次是「熱穹現象」(Heat Dome),高壓系統像一個巨大的蓋子,把熱空氣困在地面,令溫度持續上升。加上「城市熱島效應」(Urban Heat Island),市區內的柏油路、玻璃幕牆及密集建築物吸收熱力,晚上散熱慢,令晚間氣溫難以下降。

這些極端高溫對電力系統帶來不小壓力。大量使用空調,導致用電負荷急劇上升;同時高溫令電纜及變壓器散熱困難,輸電能力下降。電力質素亦會受影響:電壓容易波動或下降、諧波污染增加、設備老化加速,長遠可能影響供電穩定。

在用戶端層面,透過UTL的智能能源管理系統(HiveCloud方案)協調用電模式,有助在高峰期分散負荷,減輕電網壓力,同時維持較穩定的電力質素。部分版本更具虛擬電廠(VPP)功能,可在需要時為關鍵設施提供後備電力,作為極端天氣下的額外保障。

RSMD & UTL Win Gold at MTR eWIT(2026 1st Half) Bonus Scheme

We are pleased to share that our joint project with RSMD(Rolling Stock Maintenance Department) has been awarded Gold at the MTR eWIT(2026 1st Half) Bonus Scheme. The award ceremony took place on 10 July 2026 at the Fo Tan Railway House.

Over the past six months, since the first BatteryGuardian BMS was installed in November 2025, our teams have worked closely to tackle several battery storage challenges in daily operations. Through this collaboration, we gained valuable insights from frontline maintenance colleagues on practical issues such as routine battery care and common charging patterns.

We are grateful for RSMD’s trust and supports, which allowed us to apply BatteryGuardian solutions, including BMS and watering systems, on their battery tractor fleet. The results have helped improve battery performance and extend service life.

This Gold Award marks a meaningful starting point for us. It encourages the team to continue developing practical solutions that support better power quality and safer operations, in line with our group’s vision to “Create a More Sustainable Future” and “Protect the Safety of Society.”

很高興與大家分享,我們與鐵道車輛維修部(RSMD)合作的項目在港鐵2026(上半年)臻善圈(eWIT)計劃中榮獲金獎。頒獎典禮於2026年7月10日在火炭鐵路大樓順利舉行。

自2025年11月首套BatteryGuardian BMS安裝完成以來,雙方在過去半年緊密合作,共同解決了多項儲能系統在日常運作中的技術難題。透過是次合作,我們亦有機會與前線專業維修人員交流,深入了解電池日常保養及用家充電習慣等實際痛點。

UTL was honoured to visit SUN SUN LEATHER GOODS INDUSTRIAL LTD. (SSLG)’s Vietnam factory in Long An Province on 29–30 June 2026. Led by Manufacturing-in-charge Mr Samson Leung, the team shared insights into their critical equipment—including 24/48-hour aging test machines, automatic leather cutting beds, and factory servers—that demand uninterrupted, high-quality power.

Discussions highlighted power-quality challenges under the Vietnam grid, such as voltage dips and outages causing material waste, safety risks and equipment damage. UTL presented successful HiveCloud case studies and explored tailored solutions with the production team. Both parties expressed strong commitment to collaborate on the HiveCloud project, with a follow-up visit to SSLG’s Guangzhou factory planned for late July 2026.

We sincerely thank SSLG for the warm hospitality and well-arranged factory tour. Together, we look forward to delivering reliable power solutions that enhance manufacturing excellence.

UTL at GASCCE 2026 (24–25 Jun 2026): Digital Safety Talks with FireAlert Limited

What a great two days at the CIC Global AI and Smart Construction Conference and Exhibition (GASCCE) 2026 at Hong Kong Science Park (24–25 June 2026)! The event brought together global leaders, technology pioneers, academics, government representatives and practitioners—and the numbers speak for themselves: 12,000+ visits/participants onsite and online, with strong focus on AI, robotics, and Low-altitude Economy (LAE).

One highlight for UTL was connecting with FireAlert Limited, a Peer HKSTP R&D company, to exchange practical ideas on fire protection / fire alarm system solutions—especially how smarter detection and decision-support can support safer construction sites and smarter building operations.

At the exhibition, we also enjoyed seeing how AI is being integrated across the construction lifecycle—from design optimisation and site monitoring to asset management and O&M. The takeaway? Technology is moving from concept to real adoption, and collaboration is the key.

E&M I&T Day 2026 Recap: “AI+ Construction” at HKSTP (9 June 2026)

What a fantastic day at E&M I&T Day 2026—thank you, EMSD, for bringing together practitioners and R&D folks to exchange ideas on “AI+ Construction.” The energy at HKSTP was real, and every conversation felt genuinely hands-on.

We were very pleased to meet Dr. Darwin Tat Ming LAU (C3 Construction Robotics Limited) again and discuss how his robotics innovation can be supported by battery-related suggestions—especially around reliability and practical deployment.

We also had a great chat with ANDAS Inc. on our power reliability solution—useful perspectives for anyone working on dependable operation, monitoring, and smart maintenance.

“Four Great Families” of Lithium Batteries?

When people mention “lithium batteries”, they often overlook that these batteries actually belong to four major families: Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO), Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP), Nickel Manganese Cobalt / Nickel Cobalt Aluminium (NCM/NCA), and Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO). Each chemistry has its own personality and strengths, much like four siblings with different talents.

Here is a clear comparison across five key aspects:

- LCO offers the highest energy density and mature technology, but has relatively weaker safety, shorter cycle life (around 500–1,000 cycles), and higher cost. It is commonly found in smartphones and laptops;
- LFP excels in safety and thermal stability, delivers over 3,000 cycles, and has lower cost, though its energy density is modest. It is widely used in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and power tools;
- NCM/NCA provides high energy density and balanced performance with a thermal runaway temperature of about 200°C, making it suitable for premium electric cars, drones, and high-performance devices;
