Do Batteries Have Different “Races”?

Have you ever thought that batteries can be sprinters or marathon runners?

With the rise of electric vehicles and renewable energy, batteries generally fall into two main categories: power batteries and energy storage batteries. Power batteries are like short-distance sprinters, focusing on explosive output and lightweight design. They are mainly used in electric cars and power tools where instant high power is needed. To reduce vehicle weight and extend driving range, engineers work hard to increase their energy density, making the battery “muscular”. In contrast, energy storage batteries act as long-distance marathon runners, emphasising stability and endurance. They serve as energy warehouses for solar or wind power, helping balance grid demand or provide backup. Since they are fixed installations, space and weight are less critical, so cost-effectiveness becomes the priority.

Interestingly, their designed lifespans also differ significantly. Power batteries typically last 5–8 years and retire together with the vehicle, while energy storage batteries aim for 10 years or more, ideally matching the lifespan of solar panels.

近年新能源車同太陽能發電大行其道,電池大致可分為兩大類:動力電池同儲能電池。動力電池就像短跑選手,追求爆發力同輕量化,主要用於電動車、電動工具等需要即時大功率輸出的場合。為了減輕車重、延長續航,工程師會盡量提高其能量密度,因此電池「身形」比較講究。相對之下,儲能電池則是典型的馬拉松選手,追求長期穩定同耐力,主要用作太陽能或風電的能量倉庫,負責調峰填谷或應急備用。因為安裝位置固定,空間同重量要求較低,成本效益反而成為首要考慮。

有趣的是,兩者的壽命設計也大相逕庭。動力電池一般設計為5至8年,與電動車一同「退休」;而儲能電池則目標達10年以上,甚至力求與光伏系統「同壽」。

UTL Zhuhai Technical Visit (9 May 2026): HiveCloud Trial-Run Checks & Battery Technology Exchange

On 9 May 2026, UTL carried out our regular visit to our HiveCloud testing point in Zhuhai—focused on the trial-run stage. The goal was simple but important: collect running data and complete routine on-site inspections while the system is still under trial evaluation.

Besides reviewing system performance and data trends, we also inspected key hardware aspects, including case sealing/coating and other practical build-quality details. For trial-run deployments, these “small” hardware decisions can make a big difference once the equipment moves into long-term real-world operation.

Later, we were invited by Mr. LI Zhi Jie, Director of NanShui Power Supply Station (南水供電所), China Southern Power Grid to exchange with the station team at NanShui Power Supply Station.

Since NanShui Power Supply Station is working on a battery research project for substations, we shared our experience from Hong Kong, particularly around BMS system considerations and reliability-focused monitoring during integration.

In return, Mr. LI Zhi Jie shared his expertise on lead-acid battery substitution, including options such as sodium-ion and zinc-nickel batteries—plus the evaluation factors needed when transitioning from R&D and trial discussions to deployment decisions.

2026年5月9日,UTL進行我們在珠海的HiveCloud測試點例行檢查,重點在於系統於試用階段的實測與評估。本次工作目的在於持續收集運行數據,並完成例行現場巡檢,讓試用成果更接近真實運作情境。

UTL at Build4Asia 2026 (6 May 2026): Powering Safer Buildings with Research & Real-World Exchange

Last 6 May 2026, UTL (as a Science Park incubated company) had the opportunity to visit Build4Asia 2026 at HKCEC. The event was buzzing with practical innovation—especially across the fire safety, energy storage, and building lifecycle ecosystem.

We spent the day connecting with storage and fire-safety exhibitors, sharing technical insights and learning what’s trending in the market right now—plus how the latest R&D products are being deployed in real projects.

A highlight for us was exchanging ideas on current business needs and upgrading solutions for stronger competitiveness, including conversations around:
- Netsphere Solution Limited’s latest lead-acid battery
- Leyden Power’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
- Century Harvest Technology Co., Limited and RS Components Ltd’s fire alarm detection technology
- Peiport’s infrared camera

We also met various associations and promoted UTL solutions with them—such as introducing our Open Flame Detector with the Association of Registered Fire Service Installation Contractors of Hong Kong, discussing energy storage directions with the Hong Kong Electrical Contractors Association, and exploring battery recycling collaboration opportunities via a referral from the Hong Kong WEEE Recycling Association.

大家對L 類火災或許比較陌生,但手機充電器、電動滑板車、筆記型電腦等,在日常生活隨時都可能遇上!當鋰電池發生「熱失控」,小火可釀成大禍。

特點:
- 高溫(超過 1,000°C)易復燃,即使看似已熄滅。
- 巨量能量釋放,難以撲滅。
- 產生毒煙(HF 氣體),極其危險。
- 使用二氧化碳滅火通常無效,甚至可能惡化!

🔥 ISO 對鋰電池火災的定義

隨著鋰離子電池在電動車與儲能系統的廣泛應用,
ISO 3941 正式將鋰電池火災納入新的火災分類 —— L 類火災。

L 類火災的特性包括:
• 熱失控(thermal runaway)
• 高溫持續復燃風險
• 有毒煙氣與高能量釋放
• 需要「冷卻+隔絕」的滅火策略

這代表鋰電池火災不再被視為傳統 A/B/C 類火災的延伸,而是需要專門對策的獨立火災類型。

🧯 AVD 滅火器的角色定位

AVD 滅火器專為鋰電池火災設計,
其水基蛭石滅火劑在噴射後形成保護性泥狀層,可同時:
• 快速冷卻電池核心
• 隔絕氧氣
• 抑制復燃
• 降低熱傳播

並通過 NTA 8133 測試(UL 測試報告),符合 ISO 所定義之 L 類火災應對需求。

Outages in developed area feel safe, but when power surges back, shifted appliances or damaged wires can ignite hours later—even if you're away!

Recent HK cases highlight the risks:
- 2026: Shek Kip Mei Estate blaze killed one, injured many; faulty charger sparked it.
- 2026: Kwun Tong flat, smoking charger forced 100 evacuations.
- 2023: Lam Tin unit fire from AC plug poor contact igniting debris.
- 2022: Tuen Mun overload on power strip torched nearby furniture.
- 2020: Sha Tin short-circuit in old strip powering TV/set-top box.

On the morning of 9 April 2026, a brief voltage dip affected multiple districts on Hong Kong Island, resulting in at least 90 reports of lift entrapments and around 30 fire alarm activations, as reported by the Fire Services Department (FSD). Incidents spanned Central, Sheung Wan, North Point, Chai Wan, and Aberdeen from 9:24am, with three cases involving unwell individuals requiring ambulance standby. Notable impacts included blackouts at the Customs Headquarters Building and HSBC Main Building, disrupting ATMs and other equipment.

UTL extends our deepest sympathies to those affected and pays tribute to the FSD for their swift response, as well as HK Electric's engineering teams for restoring supply by 9:22am and guiding equipment resets. Voltage dips can arise from various factors, including aging infrastructure, weather events, or operational faults like the reported interconnection issue between HK Electric and CLP networks—premature conclusions should await full investigations.

Hong Kong's lift sector underscores the urgency: Of ~74,000 lifts, ~51,000 (69%) lack voltage-dip mitigating devices, amplifying entrapment risks during such events. While grid-wide upgrades are ideal, they entail prohibitive hidden costs—massive capital expenditures, prolonged outages, regulatory delays, and environmental impacts—with low ROI given infrequent events. Even post-upgrade, 100% reliability remains elusive due to localized vulnerabilities.

2026年4月9日上午,香港島多區發生短暫電壓驟降,消防處接獲至少90宗電梯困人報告及約30宗火警啟動個案。事件自上午9時24分起,波及中環、上環、北角、柴灣及香港仔等區,其中3宗個案涉人士不適,須待救護車戒備。受影響設施包括北角海關總部大樓及中環滙豐總行,出現全面停電,導致自動櫃員機及其他設備停運。
